POLICE COURT
MONDAY, April 10. (Before Messrs T. B. D. Paterson and F. W. Mitchell, Justices.) DRUNKENNESS. Two statutory first offenders, Edward Charles M'Lauchlan and 'Edmund James Prendergast, were_ each fined £1 for drunkenness. On a similar charge a first offender was fined £l. ‘' CROWNED ’ ’ WITH A RIFLE BUTT. “ I will not plead guilty until I see a solicitor,” said David John Carnahan when charged with assaulting Alexander Ray on Friday night in Albany street.. He asked for a remand until he could communicate with a solicitor and also asked for bail. _ “ I''have no objection to bail being given,” said Senior-sergeant ClaasCn, “but I think it should be heavy.” Accused, continued the senior sergeant, had been present‘at a party on Friday,' this being given in the house where he lived. There were a number of visitors, including Ray, who started paying attention to a young woman in whom accused was interested. Accused was of a jeafous nature, and he said, “ Get him out of here and I’ll crown him.”
“ Carnahan got Ray outside,” said the senior sergeant, “and then he crowned him good and hearty with a rifle.” Ray was still in Hospital, and his injury might yet prove serious. Senior-sergiant Claasen suggested that the court allow bail in own recognisance of £SO, and one surety of £SO, accused to report daily to the police. . . The Bench agreed to this, accused being remanded until Friday. ALLEGED INTOXICATION IN CHARGE OP CAR. , Charges of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car in Maclaggan street and being on the premises of the Shamrock Hotel after hours were preferred against George Alexander Walker, who pleaded not guilty to the first charge. Accused had been unable to, get counsel owing to the solicitors being on holiday, said Senior-sergeant Claasen, and as the court wished; him to have an opportunity of obtaining defence, he suggested that a remand be granted until Friday next. At 10.40 p.m; on Saturday, said the senior sergeant, Constable Brittenden had observed accused coming from the premises of the Shamrock Hotel carrying a two-gallon jar containing beer. Accused was alleged to be very drunk and not fit to drive a car.
On the major charge Walker was remanded until Friday, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £25 and one surety of £25. The second charge was adjourned until Friday*
