NEW ZEALAND CADETS
TRAINING AT DUNTRQON COLLEGE TWO DUHEDIH BOYS SELECTED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 10. Five New Zealand cadets have been, selected to attend a three years’course at the Royal Military College,' Duntroon, Australia, with a" view ' ta qualifying as officers in the New Zealand military forces. The cadets are; F. B. Chennells (Christchurch), F. B, M‘Gregor (Dunedin), J. A. MThersoa (Dunedin), B. F. Sceats (Gisborne),, and R. J. H. Webb (Nelson). : Announcing the names in an view this evening, the Minister of De-i fence (the Hon. F. Jones) said this was in accordance with the Government’s policy to close co-operation with: Australia in defence matters. “1 had the opportunity,” the Min-> ; ister said, “of seeing the successful applicants for cadetships after they; had completed a sis days’ course ad the Army School at Trentham, and f was most impressed with their bearing*' They are: all of fine stamp, with scholastic and athletic , qualifications above the average, and, having decided to take up the Army as a profession, will, 1 feel sure’, maintain thahigh standard set’in the past-by New’ Zealand cadets at Duntroon. During their secondary school training all five were outstanding members of their re- x spcctive cadet corps. I wish them all success, in their chosen career.” ATHLETIC RECORDS. The following are .particulars of the athletic attainments ■of the five cadets:— , F. B. Chennells attended the Medbury Preparatory School at Fendalton until 14 years old; and then entered Christ’s College for four years. He represented the college, in the. \ first' Rugby fifteen, and was' a member of the senior rowing four. He took park in college athletics as a 220yds runner, and, in his final year was heavy* weight boxing champion. J. B. M’Gregdr attended the For-* bury Primary School and was at ; the Otago :Boys’ High .School for two years, then going to, the King’s High’ Schoqli|for three years.. At King’s'ha. was member of the first Rugby 'fifteen, and was captain of the cricket eleven in 1937 and) 1938. He was senior swimming champion in those two years, and is in possession of a first class instructor’s certificate in life saving. Ha also holds the bronze medallipn with three bars. ' J. A. MTherson attended the North* east Harbour Primary School, going to the Otago Boys’. Hifeh School in 1934. He was a member of the first Rugby fifteen, was senior swimming •champion and senior distance champion in athletics, and was also Otago junior champion in the 440yds And 880yds. As a boxer he reached championship class. ; . B. F. Sceats received his primary education at the Marist Brothers’School till 1936 and then attended the Gisborne High School in' 1937 knd. 1938. He was vice-captain of the first Rugby fifteen for those two years] and" he held the school boxing championship for 1938. • - " ' R. J. H. Webb attended Nelson College from 1930, when he entered tha primary classes. He was a prefect in 1937. A member of the first Rugby fifteen and captain of the second cricket eleven, he was third in the senior athletic cup, and. won the 100yds open handicap. He also represented th» school in swimming and laVrn tennis, and was prominent in the college rifle championship. . ■ ,
