SAVE THOSE SHRINES

There is an association in France, “ Les Amis ties Oratoires,” whose mission is to preserve all the ancient shrinks from destruction. Many of these, Jn the form of tiny chapels or single- crosses, are found alongside the old roads where in times past pilgrims made their way to different famous churches in France.

Last year this association was instrumental in the preservation for the nation of the seven oratories of the forest;of Sainte-Baume, set up in fold by the Archbishop of Arles on the road fending from Saint Maximin to SainteBaume. The greater part of the ancient shrines are to be found in Provence. Languedoc, and Roussillon. A number are still to he seen on the mountains behind the Riviera, sometimes built something like a sentry box, with a cross and image of the Virgin inside, and they are never without flowers. Before them is a low step where the passer-by may kneel and pray.
