THE VOCRTREKKER CELEBRATIONS

The Voortrcklker Centenary celebrations came to a brilliant and memorable climax with the laying of the foundation stone on December 16 of the monument at Pretoria to commemorate the Great Trek of 1838. Alore than 100,000 people witnessed the ceremony, and of these about 50,000 were encamped in tents surrounding the monument site. This remarkable gathering, unique in South African history, was especially notable for exalted and devout spirit in which the ceremony was carried out. There were a few disagreeable incidents. Generally speaking, however, the ceremony has done a great deal to emphasise the cordial character of the relationship between the majority of Afrikaans and English-speaking citizens, since the latter group went to great lengths ,to associate themselves wholeheartedly with it as a national celebration of profound historical significance.— ‘ South African News Letter.’
