PROTECTED SHAGS KILLED
IGNORANT SHOOTISTS Sad proof has come to the Forest and Bird Protection Society that harmless’ marine shags have been killed by ignorant shootists in the belief that all shags are enemies of trout. It has to be repeated that the shag which attacks river fish is the black species. This bird takes some trout, especially the weaklings, but it is also very fond of eels and other enemies of trout and their ova. Occupants of launches in and about Pnlorns Sound have shot many shags whoso diet is _ limited to sea fish. Among the victims are protected species such as the rough-faced shag, which inhabits only a few rocks in Cook Strait; the spotted shag, which docs not —and indeed, could not—swallow trout; and the pied shag, another of the “ slaughtered innocents.'’
