EARLY MORNING BLAZE
PAPER STORE GUTTED LONG FIGHT FOR BRIGADE [Pm United Press Association.] WHAKATANE, February 11. Fire broke out in the Whakatane Paper Mills waste paper store this morning and 300 tons were destroyed. The concrete building was gutted. The alarm was given at 1.30 a.m,, and the brigadi travelled five miles to the mill, which is outside its area. The men worked tirelessly from 2 o’clock, and were still fighting the fire at 8 o’clock, when they had it under control with water from the adjacent river. , , The manager (Mr Horrocks) stated that the building was insured with the Norwich Union for £2,500. The roof, which covered over 3.000 square feet, was 'a glb&ving mass when the brigade arrived. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery, though spontaneous combustion might bave_ been responsible. The store was tightly packed with paper required to commence cardboard manufacture. It is expected to smoulder for hours, and a rapid removal of tho paper is impossible, ~
