CRIME IN AUCKLAND

ALLEGED SEXUAL OFFENCES UNUSUALLY LARGE NUMBER [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 1. In his charge to the grand jury at the opening ot the criminal sessions, Mr Justice Callau said that there was a disturbingly largo number of indictments alleging sexual offences. The total number of indictments was about the average for Auckland. A satisfactory feature was that there were only two charges of negligent driving, also that only one person was accused of breaking and entering, and that there were no accusations of unnatural offences. But it was rather disquieting that there were 11 sexual offences alleged in a list of 27 indictments against 27 persons. The number of Maoris accused of sexual offeiices appeared to be in excess of their proportion in population.
