When the council was considering an application from the Otago Provincial Centennial Committee for the use of the Oval in February, 1940, for the purpose of the assembly and dispersal of the various- units forming the pagentry procession to be held as part of the centennial celebrations, Cr Shepherd pointed out that the council should bo very careful about acceding to the request. His reason was that the General Committee agreed to the application on condition that the area at the time was sufficiently dry to allow motor vehicles on the Oval without causing damage. Cr Shepherd, said, that over a lengthy period the Oval had been built-up at considerable cost. Should the ground even be moderately dry there might bo damage done. There was also the aspect to consider that if the Oval were not fit for the holding of the parade there the Centennial Committee would probably he in a dilemma. The. Mayor replied that the interests of the . council as far as all city reserve* were concerned would he safeguarded. AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS. An invitation to the mayor and councillors from the St. John Ambulance Brigade to he present at the manoeuvres by the A.R.P. Auxiliary Reserve at Aramoana (near the Heads) next Sunday was accepted. Cr Shepherd said the manoeuvres related to air raid precautions, and the work of the auxiliar.v, which would be in camp at the Heads for three days, 'ehould be of particular interest to councillors, especially as this was the only organisation here that was interesting itself actively in air raid precautions. ; ADVERTISING MANUFACTURES.
