VITAL STATISTICS

BIG INCREASE IN BIRTHS FAIL IN NUMBER OF MARRIAGES The most interesting aspect of the vital statistics returns for the month of January is the big increase shown in the number of births, these exceeding last year’s figures by 33. The fall in the number of marriages which was noticed over the last month or two of 1938 has been continued into 1939, and there were eight fewer this year than last. The third section of the returns —namely, deaths—was exactly the same. The respective figures are:— 1939. 1938. Births 143 110 Deaths ... ... 80 80 Marriages ... 50 68
