SIX MONTHS' SALES AND EXPORTS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES SHOWN LOWER OFFERINGS BUT BETTER SALES Sales of Wool in New Zealand during the six months of the 1938-39 season to December 23 show an increase of nearly 10.000 bales on those for the corresponding .period, of the 1937-38 season, according to the returns compiled by Dalgety and Co. Offerings during the first six months of the current season totalled 154;558 bales, as against 160.448 bales for the first half of the 1937-38 season, a decrease of 5,890 bales, due to the lower limits at the six main sales imposed by the New Zealand Wool Committee. The actual sales for the six months to December 28, totalled 148,190 bales, as against 138.214 bales for the corresponding period of last season, an increase of 9.976 bales. The offerings of wool last month, which included the sales at Napier, Wellington, Christchurch. Timaru. and Dunedin, totalled 112.389 bales, of which 109,155 bales were sold. Shipments of wool last month were heavy, totalling 85,550 bales, of which 79,145 bales were greasy wool and 6,405 bales slipe. Exports of wool during the sis months of the current season to December 28 totalled 182,112 bales, compared with 138,832 bales for the corresponding period of last season, an increase of 43,280 bales. A decline of approximately IJd per lb on the prices paid at the first wool sale of the season held in Auckland lust November occurred at the second Auckland sale in the Town Hall to-day. There was a full bench of buyers, and bidding was brisk but not spectacular. The average price was estimated at about 8d per lb, or £ll 13s 4d a bale. The clearance was approximately 85 per cent, of the offering of 24,001) bales, and on this basis the return to growers is estimated at about £240,000. The average price at the first Auckland sale of the season was 9.76 d per lb, or £l4 2s lid a bale, and the return was £339,896. Active participation by the United States and a measure of interest on the part of Japan were the features of the sale. The bulk of the offering, however, went to the Continent, Germany being more prominent than France among European buyers.
