AMATEUR SLEUTHS

NEW TEAM IN GRAND FILM -‘Time Out for Murder,’ first of Twentieth Century-Fox’s new Roving Reporters. series, commenced to-day at the Grand with Gloria Stuart, Michael Whalen, and Chick Chandler featured. The film introduces a new pair of amateur sleuths, known as the Roving Reporters, who risk their necks for news to solve a big Manhattan case. Michael Whalen and Chick Chandler, reporter and photographer respectively, are accompanied by pretty Gloria Stuart in their investigation, and the trio in turn is accompanied by plenty of exciting action. Douglas Fowley, Robert Kellard, Jane Darwell, and Jean Rogers are included in the cast.

1 Sweet Devil,’ the associate feature, starring Bobby Howes and Jean Gillie, is by way of being an experiment on Bobby’s part; for in this the irrepressible little comedian lias made alterations in his acting technique. He has come to the conclusion, he says that acting before a camera, requires far greater precision and more deft timing than is called for in the theatre. “ The camera picks up and magnifies tli.c slightest fault,” declares Bobby. “If you grin, the grin looks six times broader than it should, and movements which are quite in order on the stage seem ridiculously exaggerated through the eye of the camera. But I love film making. With a stage production one rehearses for weeks with no certainty that the time and trouble snout will be justified by the result. With film work one gets down to the job, finishes it, draws one’s salary, and the worry is over.” While ‘ Sweet Devil ’ was being made at Pinewood Bobbv watched each day’s rushes with a critical eye, quick to detect any fault in his work that could be corrected.
