Mr Richard Hudson left this morn* ing for Christchurch. Dr S. J. Mathieson, who has been, paying a visit to Dunedin, his home' town, was a passenger by the express, this morning on his way back to Deliver, Colorado, U.S.A. Sir Clutha Mackenzie arrived yester* day from the north. Lord Dormer, who was recently ap* pointed aide-de-camp to the Governor*, General (Viscount Galway), is a pas* senger from London by the Rangitiki, which is due at Auckland on February 10. ■
Mr C. G. S. Simkin, of Dunedin, who has been appointed in economics at the Canterbury University; College, will take up his duties there early next month. Mr Simkin, who entered the University of Otago in 1933 as an arts student, received first class honours in the master of arts degree in 1936, and was placed first in New Zealand. The following.year he was awarded a national research scholar* ship by the University of New Zealand., During the last two years he has been’ the Sir Robert Stout research scholar in economics. In 1937 and last year he was appointed to give lectures hera in accountancy and economics.
Reference to the death of Mr R. Sj Black was made at the executive meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association last night by the chairman (Mr J. M. White). “Since the boys canie home Mr Black was untiring in his efforts to assist returned soldiers,” said Mr White. In the early stages ho had been of particular help, and was a Ufa member of the association.. ,
Mention of the resignation of Auxiliary Fireman J. A. Davie, of the staff ,of the Roslyn fire station, was made in the monthly report l submitted by Superintendent R. H. Price at yesterday’s meeting of the Metropolitan' Fire Board. Mr Davie has been in the employ ot the board for. the past 17$ years, in addition to which he served invthe Roslyn and Greymouth Volunteer Brigades, giving , him a total o( over 25 years in the service. Sympathy with the relatives of tha late Mr. R, W. Cherry was expressed by the Otago Cricket Association last evening. Mr Cherry was a very fina cricketer_ in the fullest sense of th« word, said Mr.J. M. Fraser, who proposed the motion, and his untimely, death was a serious loss to the. gams in Dunedin.
At a meeting of the_ Otago Centra of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand' on Monday evening the president, Mr Albert Wheeler, made feeling reference to the loss suffered by the, death of Mr R. S. Black. Ha stated that Mr Black had been one of the foremost Scots of the city and had been associated with practically, every Scottish organisation. In various ways he assisted to further Scottish. interests and maintain the traditions of Scotland, and the centre and tha community had lost a very real friend; A suitable motion of sympathy with’ the relatives was passed. Mr J. F. Fames was appointed t» the position of town clerk by the Masterton Borough Council last'night; Ha will probably take up his new duties in April. , Mr Fames, a married man of 45 years, is town clerk at Thames. He has had 28 years’ experience in local body work. For 11 years he was assistant town clerk at Christchurch. He was also a member of the Christchurch Unemployment Committee, and acted as secretary for several years. For’five years Mr Fames was town clerk and treasurer at Lower Hutt. for two years town clerk at New Brighton, and for four years assistant town clerk at Lyttelton.—Press Association.
