TRACK NOTES WORK AT RICGARTOH SOKE ATTRACTIVE GALLOPS [Special to the ‘ Star.’] RICCARTON, December 22. Attractive gallops were recorded at Riccarton this morning, Sovereign Lady. Lady Leigh, Wine Card, Garonne, Kilrobe, and Prudent Prince showing to advantage in the final trials for the southern and West Coast candidates. Sovereign Lady, with a light weight nip, moved smoothly over a mile in linin 43sec, the first half-mile in 50 2-5 and In the Dark were together at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 37 3-ssec. Lady Leigh put plenty of dash into a five-furlong run in Imin ssec, the last half-mile taking 52 4-ssec. Winecard always held Nightdress safely over a half-mile, covered in 51 3-ssec, completing the mile in Imin 46sec.

Prudent Prince and Moorsotis_ were abreast at the end of half a mile up the back from a standing start in 52sec, the last three furlongs taking 37 3-ssec. Garonne .jumped out clear of Rebel Star and Rebel Queen after running three furlongs in 38sec, and increased the lead in the run home, recording Imin 31 4-ssec for seven furlongs. Rain set in before breakfast, and the track was slower after the interval. Tantivy was again superior to Palohra over half a mile in 51 2-ssec.

Montessa sprinted three furlongs in 38 l-ssec.

Second Tunings beat Lord Hawke over a half-mile in 51sec, Real Lady taking 54 2-sseo and Great Baby 56 2-5 sec.

Kilrobe was held hack to Cape Gabo over seven furlongs, accomplished _in train 32 2-ssec, the first three taking 37 4-ssec. Cape Gabo was hard ridden in the straight, but was no match for Kilrobe.

Wandarohe drew out to half a (length advantage from Pol Roger, with_Windward beaten off at the end of six furlongs run in Imin 19seo. Supreme Court followed with Imin 20sec. Bit o’ Blue took 53 I-ssec for half a mile. Metal,,(Bird following in 55 4-ssec, while Maka Ahi heat Tint o’ Tan in 53sec.

Great Bramble was always clear of Dropped Catch over a mile, run in Imin oOsec, the first half in 52 3-ssec. Advice has been received by the owner that all is not well with Dictate at Ellerslie. and he is an unlikely starter in the Auckland Cup. L. J. Ellis has been released from his engagement to ride him in the cup, and may now have as mount Quadroon. The acceptances of Dracula, Great Bramble, and Top Rank for the first day at Wingatui were sent too late. Miss Otis broke down badly on Tuesday and will not go south. Royal Chief showed that he is not far off racing condition again by reeling off half a mile this morning in 49 sec, finishing clear of Settlement. AT AWAPUNi WILD CHASE IN FORM [Per United Press Association.] PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 22. Wild Chase, whose principal mission was made the Manawatu Cup in preference to the Auckland Cup, was in great form this morning on the Awapuni track, when, revelling in the soft going, he simply outclassed The Bigot, another cup candidate, over seven furlongs. The course was dead after recent rain, and the flags were 40ft out. Fine weather prevailed for what were practically the final gallops for the meeting. Trainers appreciated the improvement in conditions after no time trials had boon possible for two days.

Wild Chase and Argentic were responsible for two of the best gallops of the morning, and promise to be a very fit pair on Saturday. Good gallops were also recorded by Laughing Lass, Counterblast, lloyat Choice, Corroboreo. Wild Chase had The Bigot for a companion over seven furlongs in Imin 35sec, the last six in Imin 21 l-ssec. They covered the distance between the six and the five furlongs in 121 see. Wild Chase cleared out from The Bigot at the end. to finish very strongly. _ Argentic made bettor time (Imin 34sec) for seven furlongs, hut did not finish with so much in reserve as Wild Chase. He was assisted by Haughty Winner, who picked him up at the five furlongs and ran the sprint distance in Imin Bsec.

Laughing Lass continues to impress. With dash showing in her work, she decisively beat Oratory over five furlongs in Imin 6 l-sscc, the best of the morning for the distance. Ecstatic went nicely over half a mile in 52 3-ssec to beat Copy Cat. Cheetah and Diamond Cutter travelled smoothly over three furlongs in 40sec.

Royal Choice covered the last six of seven furlongs in Imin 22sec. He went very fast over the first three in 37$sec. Counterblast ran five furlongs in Imin 17sec alone. La Bon finished in front of Vascones over half a mile in 5-lsec, the youngster galloping very well. Great Flight got to the end of five furlongs in Imin 9ssec. Dainty Sue is coming on again nicely, and was well clear of Royal Record over six furlongs in Imin 22scc. Snigger finished in front of Titter and Colonel Bogey over five furlongs in Imin 9sscc. Old Surrey ran seven furlongs in Imin 36$ sec, 'not under pressure in the early stages. Taillight beat Golden Ridge over six furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssec. Taillight did very well. . Sporting Gift and Onwai took limn Bsec for five furlongs, slowing up at the finish. . Hirangi and Ned Prior occupied limn KRsec for the same distance. Bing Boy gave a very satisfactory display in a schooling round over the Conveyer finished in front of Bumble over six furlongs in Imin 23sec. Corroboree, who struck track conditions to his liking, finished full of running well ahead of Seyfried over seven furlongs in Imin 37$sec, the last six in Imin 24sec. Jazz Boy was not extended to run a comfortable five furlongs in Imin 9ssec. Florence Mills and Ina wore both rroing very well over five furlongs in Imii”7 l-ssec. . Duncannon was too good for deflation and Classform over half a mile in 55scc. Gay Laura, picked up by Dainty Doll, ran the last four furlongs of five in 55$ sec.

AT ELLERSLIE

SOME FIRST-GLASS EFFORTS [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 22. The semi-final gallops in connection with the Auckland Summer Meeting took place at Ellerslie this morning, and some first-class efforts were recorded. The course proper, on which the poles were out 35ft, was available, and the going was in excellent order. With the exception of a heavy shower during the breakfast interval, the weather was fine. A feature of the work was a mile and a-quarter by four Cup candidates, in which Mazir and The Buzzer impressed most, while Quadroon also pleased. The best half-mile was credited to Submission and Smoke Screen, and) those to register _ best figures over five furlongs were Disdain and Valerian, while Marie’s Acre was responsible for a good trial over six furlongs. Trench Fight completed seven furlong in Imin 30 4-ssec, after taking 51 l-ssec for his first half-mile. He was doing his work well at the finish. Paper Slipper, after running his first two furlongs in 24 4-ssec, was finishing on at the end of five in Imin 4sec. Coronation ran a mile in Imin 46sec, the first half taking 54sec. He had a, bit in reserve at the end. Homily got to the end of six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec. She ran the first three in 38 2-ssee, and was going comfortably over the latter stages. The Cup candidate, Wotan, hit out very freely while traversing half a mile in 50 1-Ssee. He ran the first furlong in 12 4-ssec, and finished full of ningKelly led Knight of Australia and Urination over a mile and a-quarter, which took 2min 17 2-ssec, the last round 2min Bsec, and the final seven furlongs Imin 33 3-ssoc. Kelly worked well, and showed no sign of his recent soreness.

Entail broke away at the seven furlong post, and after running his first half-mile in 51 4-sseg, covered the full distance in Imin 31 4-ssec ; This horse looks well, but as yet no rider has been engaged for him. Defaulter was going comfortably alongside Good. Passage and Old Bill throughout seven furlongs done in Imin 32 3-ssec. They covered the first three furlongs in 39 l-ssec, and it was a very satisfactory work-out. Thurnavaals came home from the sixfurlong post in Imin 22 2-ssec, and Valspear was running on at the end of five furlongs in Imin 4sec. One of the most interesting trials was that of Mazir, The Buzzer, Quadroon, and Padishah, who were in that order at the end of a mile and a-quarter in 2min 13sec. The last round took 2min 3 l-ssoc, the seven furlongs Imin 32 l-sscc, and the final half-mile 52 3-ssec. Mazir was about half a length in front of The Buzzer, with Quadroon close up, and Padishah several lengths away. The performances of Mazir and The Buzzer are sure to bring them into favour for the Cup. Smoke Screen drew attention to his Railway prospects by reeling oif half a mile in 49 l-ssoc. He was going very solidly at the end, and could have reduced the time. Marie’s Acre (MTnally) and Gay Son (Hay) and Courtcraft ran six furlongs in Imin 17sec. Marie’s Acre was doing the best at the finish, though Gay Son, who had the worst of the .weights, was not disgraced. The two-year-olds. Submission, Scandal, and Wapaugh, finished ns named at the conclusion of half a mile, which took 49sec. It was the best of the morning over the distance, and Submission was revelling in her task at the finish. Willie Win and Dictate finished clear of Arctic King at the completion of a round in 2min 5 l-ssoc. The last seven furlongs took Imin 31 l-ssec, and the last half-mile 53 l-ssec. Willie Win had a bit in hand, though Dictate also pleased by his effort. The best five furlongs of the morning was credited to Disdain, who finished clear of Snrella in Imin 3sec. The first two furlongs took 24 3-ssec, and Dis-

dain gave the impression that she could have done a good deal better. Valerian (Evans) was in front of Silver Stick after traversing five furlongs in Imm 3 2-ssec, the first taking 2osec. Valerian is 'an exceptionally smooth galloper, and should run well in bis engagements next week._ The two-year-olds Heroic Maid, Pern, and Lntanist finished as named at the conclusion of five furlongs, which occupied Imin 4 l-ssec. Among those to work on the No. 3 grass track were High Caste, Jack Tar, Konneta, and Fidelis. Stretto exercised on the tan, being timed to run her last three furlongs in 40 l-ssec.
