MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING A special meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council was held last evening to pass the statutory resolution in connection with a public works loan of £3,000. The mayor (Mr W. 'P. Hartstonge) presided, and there was a full attendance of councillors. The purpose of the loan is to clean and line with cement the water mains, to tar-seal footpaths, to carry out kerbing and channelling, and to provide a storm water drain. As security a special rate will be made and levied at the rate of one penny and one-eighth of a penny in the £, After discussion it was decided to instruct the foreman to commence some of the work after the holidays. An ordinary meeting followed, when the following business was transacted: DEPUTATION. The Rev. Mr Simpson and Mr Cate waited on the council regarding a complaint that the flower beds in the park had not received proper attention by the school children. The committee and staff resented the motion passed at the previous meeting of the council.— The position was explained to the deputation. which will report to the committee. CORRESPONDENCE. The certifying officer applied for an extension of authority to employ men under scheme 13.—The mayor’s action in this matter was approved. A letter from Mr Andrew Barclay alleging victimisation was received. The district railways engineer wrote agreeing to the extension of drain.Received. Messrs Frew Bros, applied for the use of coloured electric lights.—The request was granted, subject to a charge being made. Taieri Pipe Band applied for the use of a cupboard at the hall.—Granted. Mr J. R. Henderson applied for permission to have a loud speaker on his promises on December 23.—Permission was declined. GENERAL. The dog tax was fixed at the same rate as last year, and Mr J. Wilkie was appointed ranger and collector. The council decided to raise the footpath in Dnike street to the proper level. The council resolved to reply to the Queen’s Park Cricket Club that it could not assist with grass cutting on the park.
