Eardlcy Fenwick, of Wellington, is the truest of her sister-in-law, Mrs Edgar Hazlctt, Alva street. Mrs John Lusk and family are spending the vacation at their country cottage at Taieri Mouth. Miss Diana Abraham left on Monday for Hamilton to spend the holidays with her sister, Airs D’Arcy. Air and Airs W. N. Wood will leave on Tuesday on a motoring tour of the North Island. They will spend Christmas with relatives in Wellington. The engagement is announced of "William James, only son of Air and Mrs W. Rowley, Oamaru, to Letfy Blanche, youngest daughter of Air and Airs A. R. Powell, of Dundas street, Dunedin. Airs John Stronach returned yesterday to her homo in Timaru.

The Rev. T. A. AFNnughton and Mrs AFNanghton, of Melbourne, with their small daughter, arrived by the Maunganni yesterday to spend the vacation with relatives in Dunedin. Mr Cecil Norris. The Misses Hamilton (2), who have been associated with Hamilton House, Queenstown, for the past 30 years, have relinquished the management and intend to live privately in Queenstown after spending a few weeks’ holidaymaking in .Nelson. A jolly “ gift ” evening was given by Miss Betty Breese at her home in Dahneny street on Saturday evening, the guest of honour being Miss Helena Fraser, who is to bo a .January bride. Mrs Maurice Joel gave a “ glass gift ” party in the Savoy on ARtmlay afternoon in honour of Miss Alma liioivne, whose marriage will take .place this week. At liie invitation of their president, | Airs A. Herbert, the members of the j Housewives’ Union met at the Vedic | for a social afternoon on Thursday last, j as the linal meeting for the year. After partaking of a dainty afternoon tea ( several members spoke of the activities during the year. The president, Airs A. Herbert, alluded to the difficulties I the union experienced owing to the ill- 1 ness of members and the fact that the energy of members was detracted for election activities, which interfered somewhat with progression, and expressed the hope that the union would flourish next year. Miss L. Griffith intimated that there was an urgent need at the present time for women to take a real interest in women’s affairs, especially social needs for the not-so-well-off woman. Woman’s claims suffered from want of association with tlieir sex, and she suggested that this union was a source from which a strong ellort might he made in that direction. Another member urged members to buy New Zealand goods for New Zealand's sake. Airs Baniford, in a charming speech, presented the president with a bouquet of poppies. The meeting decided to send to the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. AT. J. Savage, a cheery message of goodwill. Amongst those present were Mesdames Herbert, Ginn, Baniford, Alathoson, l.eslie, Robertson, Wilson, Brooks. M’Dermott. and Misses Inglis, Sherriff, Braid, Griffith, aml others.

.Miss Janette Ewing returned yesterday by the Alaiinganui from a tumult road. The December mooting of the Taiori Women’s Institute took the form of a social evening in the Kinniont Hall, when .Mrs Williamson presided over a large gathering of members and friends. After the usual business had been attended to an enjoyable programme was presented, items being interspersed with several amusing games. The concert programme was as follows: — Songs, ‘ Largo 1 and lullaby,’ the choir; violin duct, ‘ Andante,’ Messrs Cate and Tarrant; vocal quartet, * Pro Phundo Basso ’ —Messrs Alagee and Cate and Mesdames Cate and Currie; vieal trio, ‘ Alisty Islands ’ —.Mesdames Brugh, Beale, and Johnstone; quarterhour entertainment—Mesdames Brngh, Johnstone, Stewart, Andrews, and Taylor. Supper followed and the meeting doted with the National Anthem. On Monday night, after the meeting of the City" Council, the mayor and mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. H. Allen) entertained councillors and their wives and heads of departments and thenwives at supper in the reception rooms at the Town Hall. A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the St. Kilda bowling green on Thursday, when the ladies from the Balclutha Chib were the guests of the St. Kilda ladies. The visitors were entertained at the Savoy for lunch, and then taken to the green. Rain came as soon as bowling commenced, so the guests were entertained in the pavilion. “ trump whist ” being played until 3 p.m. After tea had been served, the president, Airs Nelson, cordially welcomed the visitors, and presented the prizes won at cards. The president of the Balclutha Chili suitably replied, thanking the St. Kilda ladies for a happv time and the hospitality extended to them. The ram having ceased, bowling was resumed, nine heads being played for the “ Lough Danner,” Balclutha winning by four points. Afrs Marshall! Macdonald, of Wellington is visiting Dunedin to make arrangements for the children’s health camp, which will be oipened at Waikouaiti early in January. Aliss June Afofi'ett, of the staff of the Public Library, has accepted a position on the staff of the Invercargill Public Library, and will leave for the south on Tuesday.

Miss Pat Leahy returned yesterday from An elk I and, where she has been furtherin'' her studies in architecture. Miss C. E. Goodall, who has retired from the position of matron of Knox College, left yesterday for the north. Mrs Percy Brown, who has been the guest of the Misses Graham, left yesterday to spend Christmas with her daughter, Mrs Goulter, Wellington. Miss Molly (Runnerstrum returned this afternoon from a visit to Wellington. Mrs -Norman Speight and family are spending the vacation at The Rocks, Riverton. Mrs Walker and Alias Moody, Auckland. are the • guests of Airs A. S. Moody, Napier street. Mrs T. Cunningham and Miss Betty Cunningham, Hawke’s (Bay, are the guests of Airs J. Shand, Anderson’s Bay. Bride-to-be Entertained. In honour of Miss Ethel Taylor, whose marriage will take place this week, various hostesses have entertained during the past month, among them was Airs W. B. Lambert, who was hostess at a dinner party at her resilience in Caversham, and Aliss Betty Johnstone, who entertained a number of guests at a “ bathroom ” evening, when those present included Alesdames Ralph Paterson, Neil Fisse, W. P. Wellington, and Alisses Nance Taylor, F'6d Paterson, Ainslie APLeod, jean Lennox, M. Cameron, Ngaire Walls. Wvn Paterson, Flo Lennox, Olive Wright, ,L Blakeley, and Margaret Clemens. Mrs Neil Fisse and Airs P. Wellington were hostesses at a “ kitchen evening at the latter’s home in Maori Hill, and Mrs G. F. M‘Kellar and Mr 1). M'Kellar entertained at a “ trump whist ” evening at. their homo in St. Clair. Miss Ainslie APLeod was hostess at a “ gift ” afternoon at the Savoy. A “ pantry ” party was given by Mrs Ralph Paterson at her home in Highgate on Saturday afternoon in honour of Aliss Tavlor. The guests included Alesdames E. Otwav Taylor, F. AV. AJitchell. AV. P.
