The Rev. Dr Gumming was a passenger by the 11.35 express to-day en route to Auckland. Mr W. G. Kindley left this morning for Auckland. Dr Monheimer returned yesterday from the north. At last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre the resignation was received with regret of Mr W. Warren, who is (leaving shortly for England to join the Royal Air Force. The president (Mr W. A. Jenkins) spoke eulogistically of Mr Warren’s work for swimming, and expressed the good wishes of all for his success abroad.. Sir James Grose has been appointed a director of Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Ltd., to fill a vacancy on the board caused by the death of Sir Harold (Beauchamp. Father P. T. B. M'Keefrey will leave Auckland next week for a year’s visit to Europe. While abroad he-'will’spend a good deal of his time in historical research in Rome, Lyons,_ Paris, and Ireland. He will pay particular attention to the early history of the Auckland diocese. The Otago Swimming Centre at its meeting last night decided to recommend to the New Zealand Council that Mr Alex. Greig, a vice-president of the centre and prominent coach and official, be awarded the- New Zealand hon* blazer. The president (Mr W. A. Jenkins) referred to Mr Greig’s distinguished services to the sport over a long period of years, and added that if the recommendation were approved a suitable function, would be arranged for the presentation to be made. Mr J. G. Simon, son of Sir John Simon, Chancellor of the Exchequer, arrived at Wellington to-day by the Wanganella with his wife and small daughter. He is assistant manager of the P. and 0. Company, and has been visiting Australia. Mr Simon and his wife have come to spend Christmas in New Zealand. They will see something of the North Island and leave on a pleasure cruise by the Narkunda to the Bay of Islands, after which they will return to Australia.—Press Association. Having spent the past six months- in Australia on a health-recruiting tour, Mr Justice Ostler has returned to Auckland by the Awatea from Sydney with Mrs Ostler. After staying in Auckland until after_ Christmas, they will continue to Wellington, where Mr Justice _ Ostler expects to resume his duties in the New Year. Their tour of Australia embraced most of Queensland. After spending_ about 10 weeks at a holiday resort inside the Great Barrier Reef, they went on to Cairns,, and later went inland tb the high tableland behind Cairns. Other places visited included Townsville, (Rockhampton, and Darling Downs. On occasions in the past, Mr Justice Ostler has spent much time in South Africa hunting big game, but he said that such holidays were now over, for his health would not allow him to hunt any more.
