CHRISTMAS TRAVELLERS
EARLY BROKINGS THIS YEAR BUSY TIME AHEAD Present indications point to heavy railway traffic from now onward. A well-filled train from Christchurch was expected this afternoon, and for the next few days the position will be the same. Outward traffic from the Dunedin station is also expected to be heavy. On Christmas Day all trains leaving Dunedin are nearly fully booked, and it was stated by the station master (Mr C. Pope) this morning that bookings are heavier at present than for the corresponding period last year on account of a large number of people making their reservations early in order to avoid the 10 per cent, increase in railway rates which were announced recently. On Friday, 1,960 passengers will leave here for the north. The train departing at 8.45 a.m. will carry 380 passengers, and trains at 10.50 a.m. 11.35 a.m., and 10 p.m. will each carry 350, while the last one to leave that clay, the 11.20 p.m., will have 530 aboard. On Christmas Day, 3,490 passengers are expected to be carried to various parts. The first train, which leaves for Central Otago at 7.52 a.m., will carry 250 passengers, and those for Gore at 8.33 a.m., ami Invercargill at 9 a.m., will have 600 each. On the 8.45 train for Christchurch there will he 550 passengers, and those leaving for the same destination at 10.50 and 11.35 will both carrv 570, while another leaving at 6.33 p.m., will have ‘l5O aboard.
