Mr and Mrs G. J. Errington returned on Wednesday from an extended tour abroad.

The engagement has been announced of Dr E. F. Northcroft, 62 Queen Anno street, London, and Miss Brenda Guthrie, formerly of Christchurch and Dunedin, New Zealand. Dr Northcroft is a nephew of the Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft, of Christchurch, and Miss Guthrie is a daughter of the late Dr Thomas Orr Guthrie. The marriage will probably take place early in the New Year.

Mr and Mrs J. O. FI. Tripp, Glenoary Station, Hakataramea, who will be in town for the M'Clymout—Fitcihett wedding on Monday, will be the guests of Miss Orbell, Cumberland street.

Mr R. L. Orbell and Miss June Orfaell, Timaru, will be in town for the M'Clymont—Fitchett wedding.

Miss Joan Butler, Wellington, is the guest of her mother, Mrs J. G. Butler, for the Jones—Butler wedding, which takes place this evening.

Miss Betty M'Arthur has returned from a holiday visit to Woodbury, Canterbury.

Mrs R. Lawn, Roslyh, and Miss Mollie Lawn left on Thursday on an extended tour of the North Island. They will he away about two months, and will visit Mr Lawn, jun., in New Plymouth.

On Saturday last Mrs W. Sinclair wa« hostess at an enjoyable “ pantry afternoon, at her home in Opoho, in honour of Miss Ruby Hardie, who is to be a December bride. The hostess wore a frock of green floral crepe de chine, made on slim-fitting lines and trimmed with golden corn collar and cuffs. A navy and white floral frock was worn by Miss Hardie. Among those present were Mesdames Walker (Milton), Hardie, Boulger, Anderson, W. Wilkie, J. Wilkie. Hitt, Aitken, M'Lellan, Daniels, Hunter, Wright. Isaac, Gwynne, and the Misses Wilkie, Sinclair, Saul, Hunter, N. Isaac, J. Isaac, Arnold, and Walker (Milton).

Miss Hazel Johnson, Palmerston North, is spending the vacation in Suva.

Horticultural enthusiasts will liiul interest in ttie news that a white delphinium has just made its appearance in Melbourne, one from a nursery at Eddendon, Victoria, where experts have been working on it for some time. Another of the family of which particular note is being taken has developed a dark centre. Overseas experts have just succeeded in developing this strain after working on it for two or three years, and many of their seedlings are being tried and tested in Victoria.

A very enjoyable “ pantry ” parly was given at the home of Mr Alan Wright, Kenmure road, mi Tuesday evening, when the guest of honour was Miss Alena Wright, a December bride -who was the recipient of some lovely gifts. The other guests were:—Mesdames Barclay, Duncan, Gamble, Jarvis, Mills, BPMillan, Drain, Smith, Williams, Walker, Wilkinson, and the Blisses Finnic, Hurrendel, Johnston, Maher, Mitehera, O’Connell, Ross, Robins, and Stephen.

A large gathering of ladies met at the residence of Airs AA 7 , H. Jackson, Ravensbourne, on AA 7 cdnesday evening to do honour to two guests, Alesdames Kibblewhite and Jackson, who are leaving the district. Mrs A. G. Thomson voiced the regret of all present at losing two such valued members of the community, and on behalf of the choir of the Mothers’ Union, presented Airs Jackson with a pair of crystal candlesticks. Airs Laraond, on behalf of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild, presented Airs Kibblewhite with a handsome vase. An enjoyable evening was spent in competitions and music. Parties for a Bride-to-be.

Mrs Janies Ritchie gave a luncheon party at her home in York place on Tuesday in honour of Miss Diana Fitchett, whose marriage to Mr Graham M'Clymont will take place next week. Those present included Mesdames John Ritchie and Earltou Wilson, and Misses Mary Reeves, Molly Birch, Joan Ritchie, Lorraine Orbell, Peggy Brower, and Diana Abraham. Other hostesses for Miss Fitchett were Miss M. Downie Stewart, who gave a five o’clock party at her home in Heriot Row, and Mrs Russell Ritchie, who gave a luncheon party ■on Thursday in the Otago Women’s Club. A lovely bowl of delphiniums and bride gladioli made an atattractive luncheon table decoration, and each of the guests was presented with a dainty posy.

Mr and Mrs H. Tucker and family left yesterday to spend some weeks in Auckland.

Mr and Mrs N. J. Gill. Auckland, with their two children, will arrive at the week-end to spend Christmas with the latter’s mother, Mrs Bedford, East Taieri.

Airs F. M. Don, of Wellington, arrived in Dunedin from the north today to attend the function in connection with the opening of the new Labour hall in Dunedin South.

Miss Lily Stevens, Dunedin, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs Alansfonl, Xgapara. She will return home next Wednesday to prepare for another trip to Sydney, and will depart from Dunedin on Boxing Day. Mrs G. A. Goughian entertained the ladies of the 0.L.8.A. Bowling Club at their green on Monday, December 10. The afternoon was spent in progressive doubles, and the winners were: Motidamcs Paterson (president of the centre) and Lawrie, the runners-up being Mesdames Thompson and Bolt. Mis Cook, secretary of the Ladies’ Bowling Association, was also present. Lady Cheetham, London, arrived at Auckland this week. She will he the guest of their Excellencies Viscount and Viscountess Galway at Government House, Auckland, and will remain in the Dominion for two months, after which she will complete a world tour via Sydney, Darwin, and Java. Miss G. L. O. Jeffreys, M.A., assistant librarian at Canterbury University College, who has been taking a course at London University, will return to Christchurch in January. She has been elected a Fellow' of the Library Association as a result of her successful year’s work at the School of Librarianship. On Tuesday last Mrs W. J. Martyn was hostess at an afternoon tea party at her home in Sheen street in honour of Airs J. Williams. Other guests present were Alesdames R. W. S. Dotting, A. -J. Gillman, AI, G. M'lnnes, Alaicol in Watt, J. L. Anderson. W. Lang, O. Gordon Cox, and K. Sheen. Airs H. D. Kerr was hostess at an afternoon tea party on Thursday at her home in Highgate, given in honour of Airs Percy Priest, who leaves shortly to take up her residence in Kenya. Other guests present were Msedames O. K. Tennent, W. D. Young. U. A. Prisk, 0. Napier, R. V. Pike, R. S. Black, W. J. Alullin, and Wilkin.

Mrs Lyndon Maeassey entertained friends to a “ paper ” party at her home in Cumberland street in honour of Bliss Alma Browne, whose marriage will take place next week. The other guests included Bfesdames Ralph Paterson, Maurice Joel, James Fitzgerald, Kenneth Graham, and Blisses Joan Tasmun-Smith, Barbara Doclgslum, Blary Lysaght, Isobel Newlands, and Pat Hanlon. Blisses Barbara Dodgshun and Joan Tasman-Smith were hostesses on Wednesday also at an afternoon tea party in honour of Bliss Alma Browne. Each guest brought an article for the picnic basket.

A jolly “ card ” evening was “given by Bliss Mavis Cameron in honour of Bliss Helen Mains, who is leaving shortly for the Boy Scout jamboree in Sydney. An enjoyable evening was spent on Tuesday last, when Aliss AVyn Henderson celebrated her twenty-first birthday at the residence of Airs Todd, Oakland street, Anderson’s Bay. A programme of games and competitions was enjoyed by everyone. Some handsome gifts were received by the guest of the evening, to whom a toast was proposed at supper by Air AV. Gwynne, and responded to by her father, Air AV. Petrie-Henderson, who then presented his daughter with the customary key. Among those present were: Alesdames Todd, Henderson, Ganderton (2), Lawrence, Gwynne, Trebilcock, Alisses AVinnio Todd, Stella John-

Tlie Lancashire and Yorkshire Association held the usual monthly social evening on Saturday last, a very enjoyable impromptu programme being presented, with many members taking part. Mrs Wilton, Mrs Ellis, Mr Swift, Mr Harrison, Mrs M‘Quarrie, Mrs Ridding. Air Kllis. Mr Longworth, Mrs Haworth, and Airs Smith (songs). The president (Airs Brooks) gave a welcome to Mr Clark, who spoke of tho visit of two distinguished people to New Zealand. Christmas carols, community singing, and the usual dances, supper, concluding with the singing of the club’s party song brought a happy evening to a close. Tho members of the St. Bernadette’s Needlework Guild committee held a very successful “ musicale ” at the Vedic Cafe in aid of the fancy stall at tho forthcoming fete. Items were contributed bv “ Irenee,” Alesdames Lacey and Woodhouse, Alisses E. Kirkham and B. Loan. Aliss M. APAlahon acted as accompanist. The following were present or sent donations: Rev.
