EVENING SPORTS

G9OD PERFORMANCES UNDER DIFFICULTIES The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has been unfortunate in the weather experienced so far this season for its evening meetings. Of five meetings scheduled one had to be abandoned and the other four have been held in bad weather. A cold, strong wind blew for last evening's meeting, and it said much for the enthusiasm of local athletes that the fields in practically all events were well filled, and in one, the 100yds open, three heats were necessary. The conditions affected the standard of performance, but R. Scott Moody’s win in the half-mile handicap in 2min 4sec was, under the circumstances, a good effort. Moody, who runs for the Anglican Club, is a much improved runner this season, and gives every indication that he will be good opposition for the best local middle-distance runners before the season has advanced much further. The winner of the 100yds open was J. Strathern, who, running off Byds, showed pleasing form. A. R. Duff, the New Zealand University 220yds champion, , started off the Iyd mark in this race and finished fourth, a yard and a-half behind the winner. Duff showed good form, and by the time the Australian stars arrive in Otago should be near his best. In the field event section, A. Barr, of the Caversham Chib, put up bis best performance so far to carry off the javelin event with a good net throw of 114 ft Sin. He showed great improvement, his best effort up till a fortnight ago being a throw of 90ft.
