STRAND

Victor M'Laglen turns in one of the best jobs of acting in his long and notable screen career in ‘ The Devil’s Party,’ which is the new Strand feature. There are moments when his portrait of Marty Malone, the big, stormy-hearted Irishman, who strays from the straight and narrow path and redeems himself by a great sacrifice, approaches his performance in ‘ The Informer.’ The leading feminine part in the picture is played by Beatrice Roberts, a beautiful newcomer to films. Paul Kelly is sincere as the priest, and William Gargan and John _ Gallaudet portray the two policemen in the old gang with an appealing directness. Frank Jeuks and the moon-faced Dave Oliver are in the supporting cast. Genevieve, 29-ycar-old disabled warhorse, came out of retirement to find itself a film star in ‘ Who’s Your Lady Friend?’ the second film. Carol Reed, director of 1 Who’s Your Lady Friend?’ wanted a horse to play the part of the last cab horse in Vienna. It has an important part in the picture. Viennese composer Richard Stolz scored the music for a 50-piece orchestra—and a horse! The animal has to prick its ears up when its master sings, take its cue, and neigh in pauses between the piano and the big drum. ‘ Who’s Your Lady stars Frances Da,y opposite Vic Oliver, and the supporting cast includes Romney Brent. Margaret Lockwood, and Betty Stockfeld.
