BRILLIANT SWIMMING

TWO UNOFFICIAL RECORDS KIWI CLUB'S ANNUAL CARNIVAL CHRISTINE GARVIN'S GREAT EFFORT Swimming of real championship class ■was provided in some of the events at the carnival staged by the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club before a good crowd of spectators at the Municipal Baths last night. The honours of the meeting were divided bv Miss Christine Garvin, of the Kiwi Club, and Clive Cliff, the East Christchurch swimmer, each of whom improved upon existing New Zealand records, though, being put up in handicaps, they cannot be recognised. Miss Garvin, holder of the New Zealand intermediate 100yds girls’ title, is in brilliant form this season, and following her Co 3-ssec for 100yds at the opening carnival a fortnight ago, this slightly-built swimmer won the 100yds ladies’ handicap from scratch in 64sec, time which has never been equalled by a woman swimmer in New Zealand. It was four-fifths of a second faster than the recognised ladies’ and intermediate girls’ New Zealand records. Miss Garvin returned 29scc in winning a heat of the intermediate and junior 50yds handicap, and was timed at 2min 52 2-ssec in her heat of the 220yds handicap. Cliff came to Dunedin with a great reputation as a back stroke swimmer, and the Canterbury man fully lived up to it. He employs a wide arm pull, not unlike that latterly adopted by P. E. Mathieson, and in winning the 100yds invitation back stroke handicap from the promising Southland champion, C. Martin, he did 66 2-ssec, which was 2scc better than the previous best recognised time for the distance.

Also competing in this race was Miss Joyce Macdonald, the Empire Games representative, who finished a close fourth in opposition to some of New Zealand’s best men back stroke exponents, and in doing so she was touching Dominion ladies’ record time. Cliff swam back stroke in a heat of the 220yds free style handicap, and ho was given an ovation by the onlookers when he splashed his way to a well-earned win in 2min 41sec, but he did not start •in the final, which was won by the Dunedin swimmer, E. B. Toase. Under new rules that have been adopted this season competitors ore permitted to improve only a given margin on their declared times, and this procedure led to the disqualification of several swimmers last night. One who met with that fate was W. Dyson, the scratch man, in the 220yds breast stroke handicap! but he had consolation in the fact that his winning time of 3min 7 4-ssec has been beaten only once in local competition, by J. 0. W. Davies, the Empire Games representative. First place eventually was awarded to Miss Winnie Dunn, the New Zealand ladies’ champion.

A spectacular and exciting contest was fought in the 133 l-3yds relay championship, Dunedin retaining the title by a margin of inches from Kiwi No. 1, with St. Clair in third place, the time being 68 l-osec. This gave Dunedin 5 points for ,tho Alex. Greig Shield, at present held by Kiwi, who scored 3, St. Clair being credited, with 1. The presence of several Southland and Baiclutha swimmers added interest to the programme, and Miss Beryl Westcrby (Murihiku), who set a New Zealand junior back stroke record at one period last season, won the 66 2-3yds intermediate and junior handicap at this stylo, the Southland girl being awarded first place owing to the disqualification of I. Hall (Kiwi), who improved 7see on his declared time.

The 50yds invitation handicap was won by C. Lawrence (Kiwi) in 27 4-ssec, and the St. Clair Club’s secretary, J. Robert, won the 100yds interclub handicap. P. D. Young (Kiwi) performed very consistently, winning the interclub diving and being second in both the 100yds and 220yds free style handicaps. The various junior and intermediate events were well contested, and with good fields and close finishes the swimming was always interesting. In the latter stages of the evening the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. \V. Parry) and Mrs Parry attended the carnival, accompanied by the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), and Mr and Mrs Parry were warmly welcomed. The Minister said that it was hoped this year to have 70.000 new swimmers in New Zealand. Too many people, he said, were losing their lives in New Zealand through drowning. 1 For the period in which swimming was indulged the toll by drowning was greater than it was on the road. It was necessary, therefore, to put their best foot forward to overcome this %tate of affairs, and he expressed his pleasure at the assistance he had been gi ven by swimming and life saving officials.
