GIVEN FURTHER CHANCE

CAR CONVERSION CHARGE “ REALLY A CATSPAW " •“Rather against my better judgment, but in consideration of the youth of the accused and of the fact that he has had rather an unfortunate spin in the past, I will give him a final chance,” said the magistrate (Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.), in pronouncing sentence upon Joe Sutherland, the young man who was yesterday convicted on a chargeV of converting a motor car to his own use. Mr A. Duncan, appearing for the accused, said that Sutherland had acted very foolishly in misleading the traffic officer. He was already on probation, but the placement officer had intimated that he would endeavour to find employment for him in the country. Counsel suggested that His Worship might see his way to extend the accused’s period of probation on condition that he did not consort further with Towns. After conferring with the probation officer (Mr E. P. Mosley) the magistrate ordered Sutherland to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months, conditions being that he did not associate with persons disapproved of by the probation officer and that he accepted any employment found for him. “ You are not entitled to this chance,” added the Magistrate, as he administered the customary warning to the defendant. His Worship declined to make any order on the accused for payment of 16s, the amount of damage done to the car, stating that the accused had really been a catspaw in the matter.
