TRADE AND CONSULAR SERVICE

AMERICAN OFFICIALS FOR AUSTRALIA [Peb United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. The United States officials who are to take up appointments in Australia were through passengers for Sydney by the Monterey to-day. They were Mr L. C. Zapf, who will become the United States Trade Commissioner at Sydney, and Dr W. A. Foote, who has been appointed United States Consul at Melbourne. Mr Zapf has recently been Assistant Director of Foreign and Domestic Commerce Bureau of the United States Department of Commerce and has had direct supervision over his country’s foreign trade. He was formerly manager of the Foreign Commerce Department of the Chambers of Commerce of the United States, and helped to organise and was secretary of the International Chamber of Commerce with headquarters at Paris. It was his intention to make a thorough study of trade and industry in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Zapf said. He added that the Dominion would be in his territory. The United States desired reciprocal trade with foreign countries and he would investigate whether there were any surplus commodities produced here which might find a market in his country As he had not been in Australia or New Zealand before, he was not prepared to make any suggestions as to the directions in which trade with the United States could be developed. Dr Foote was formerly in the United States Consular Service at. Batavia. Sumatra, Hamburg and Port Said. He has also been press officer at the United States Foreign Cilice at Washington.
