BOY SCOUTS
ROSLYN TROOP The twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Ist Dunedin (Roslyn) Scouts was held on Thursday evening. The group, which is still the strongest in the Metropolitan District, is going ahead at a greatly increased pace—the total of officers, Scouts, and Cubs being now 126, an increase of 32 over last year. Owing to the fact that the Cub section has been so strong for the past two years, it has been necessary to establish a No. 2 Troop to take up a larger number of boys as they reach Scout age; and further, owing to the great distance which some of the boys have to travel to the Maori Hill Scout Hall, it was considered necessary to open an additional troop nearer the centre of the district. Arrangements were consequently made for securing the Mechanics’ Institute Hall, Highgate, for the purpose and the nucleus of the new troop is already meeting there. This will make Scouting possible for a number of boys in the Belleknowes and Kaikorai districts, who previously were too far away from any other Scout centre. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman (Mr Dickson) urged all parents to join as honorary members of the group. The commitments in connection with the establishment of the No. 2 Troop would be considerable, and the committee required all the assistance possible to establish it on a sound basis.
G.S.M. Ashby, seconding the motion, spoke on behalf of the officers of the group, and touched on the activities of the Troop and Cub Packs. Mr Phillips congratulated the officers on their fine effort during the year, and. thanked them on behalf of the Committee and parents for the work, which they had put into Scouting in the district. All the office-bearers were re-elected for the ensuing year, and the. committee was strengthened by the addition of several new members.
Final arrangements were made for the Group Hobbies Exhibition to be held at the Maori Hill Scout Hall, and it was also arranged to close the financial year on June 30, to meet the wishes of Dominion headquarters. Supper was served by the lady members of the committee.
