[From Ouh Baldlcxha Cobeespondikt.] BOWLING. A very successful one-day rink tournament was held on the Kaitangata green on Labour Day under the_ aus- • pices of the Kaitangata and Stirling Clubs. The weather was ideal and the green in good order, _ so that partici- ( pants spent a very enjoyable day. The officials of the clubs carried out arrangements in a very capab.M way,while refreshments were provided during the day, the ladies rendering valuable assistance in this connection. Sixteen rinks from Dunedin, Central Otago, and South Otago took part, and . the winners turned up in a Caledonian Club rink, with a Stirling rink second. In the final M'Leod, Clancy, Sutherland, Porter (Caledonian) 16, beat Baird, Little, Duncan, Jefferson (Stirling) 14. . BALCLUTHA COURT. After an absence of some weeks through illness, Mr H. J.’ Dison, S.M., has resumed duty, and presided over the monthly sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate’s Court yesterday. —Traffic Regulations.— , P. J. Hunter, Main Highways Traffio Inspector, proceeded against the following:— Sydney Alfred Eustace (Stirling) for having no driver’s license.—Fined 20s, with 10s costs. E. and S. Smith (Dunedin) for, breach of goods service license in that the necessary authority was not on' the , lorry.—Fined 10s, with I 5« cosfs. -

Smart (Dunedin) for exceeding speed limit on Balclutha-Kaka Point highway.—The inspector said it was a very dark night and" the lorry was fully loaded and travelling at 40 m.p.h.—Fined 40s, with 10s costs. D. R. M'Diarmid (Dunedin) for driving in a dangerous manner on tlis Balelutha-Papatowai highway.—Mr R. R. Grigor, for the defendant, entered, a plea of guilty.—The inspector said defendant had been driving on the. wrong eide of the road and had caused him (the inspector) to get off the road , and had just passed him with inches to spare.—Mr Grigor said defendant had; been driving on the crown of the road and had swerved to pass the Inspector, 1 there being plenty of .room. Defendant had. been driving 2Q years and_ bad never made a breach of the regulations. He thought he was cmite entitled to~ drive on the crown of the on a narrow country road.—The magistrate pointed out that the new regulations provided that a drjver must keep te hii left side all the. time.—Mr Grigor said this-was not'generally known. —The inspector read the r regulation to confirm "the magistrate's-, remarks. —> Fined 10s. with 10s costs. James Fraser (Dunedin) for exceeding: maximum load.—Defendant pleaded guilty and said the "driver had on a load of wet gravel. Had the gravel been dry it would hare come within the limit provided for in his license.—■ Fined 20s. with 12s costs. For having no warrants of fitness, John G. Chalmers (Invercargi'll) "wan fined 20s, costs 10s; Robert Sharp (Gore) los. costs 10s; Charles W. Hornbrook (Timaru) claimed £2 10s from Leslie Stewart (Mosgiel). on a judgment summons.—Debtor said the account had been incurred by his brother, who was now in Australia, It appeared that he would. have „to pay the amount, and was prepared, to pay 5s a week.—Mr Grigor, for plaintiff, said the amount was rather small.—» Order made for payment of 7s 6d a week, first payment November 7. —Claim for Hire.— . James Crowe, Kaitangata, claimed £8 5s from Lloyd Taylor. Inch Ctutha, for hire of a motor cycle.—The evi» deuce of plaintiff had been talken last court day.—Mr W. H. Carson, for plaintiff, said there was again no appearance of defendant, and he asked for judgment by default.—Mr J. T< ' Walter, for defendant, said that plaintiff had claimed that the machine had been sold on a hire-purchase agreement, but no such agreement had been produced in court. Plaintiff had also stated that defendant was to pay, foB the use of the machine, but later' on* when he called' on Taylor, he did noti appear anxious to take the machine back, preferring to get his money. His contention was that the machine "wag a " dud " one. It was a case in which, both parties had been careless in their dealings, and he submitted that plaintiff had not shown that there was a . hire-purchase agreement. He was of opinion that there had been a straightout sale.—His Worhship said it would appear that plaintiff was charging for the use of the machine for two months* —Mr Walter (pointed out that plaintiff] had been paid £5 deposit, and £1 a week was a bit high for the use of the machine, which he had got back. Ha thought .plaintiff had not done badly.—j, Mr Carson stated that the.machine.had since been sold for £l7.—His Worship suggested that half the amount claimed would be a fair thing for the hire of the machine.—Counsel were agreeable) to this, and judgment was given for £4 ss, with £2 costs.
