ILLEGAL OPERATION
WOMAN CONVICTED MERCY RECOMMENDED [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON. October 2G. Convicting Marjorie Pickering, aged 42, a nurse and housekeeper, of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage, the jury which had tried her in the Supreme Court, added to its verdict, delivered to-day, a very strong recommendation to mercy on the ground that those who procured the commission of the offences were equally guilty with the accused The prisoner was remanded for sentence. The jury was out for five hours and five minutes. A legal point remains to be argued. After the verdict had been announced, Mr Ongley applied for His Honour to reserve for the Court of Appeal! the question whether the jury had been directed in His Honour’s summing up on the nature of the corroborative evidence required and whether the corroboration that had been heard was sufficient on -each count Argument on the noint was adjourned without a time being fixed.
