BOARD OF GOVERNORS

OTAGO HIGH SCHOOLS MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Boys and Girls’ High Schools Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs W. R. Brugh (in the chair), A. H. Allen, J; C. ,H. Somerville, F. H. Campbell, J. Robertson, and Bishop Fitchett, Dr G. E. Thomson, and Mrs D. G. McMillan. Accounts amounting to £2,286 11s 6d were passed for payment. A letter was received from the rector of the Otago Boys’ High School (Mr 11. P. Kidson) reporting a gift of etchings and engravings of famous pictures from Mr David Hutton.—lt was decided that the pictures be framed and Mr Hutton be thanked for his generosity. The Director of Education forwarded a copy of a letter to the Public Works Department asking for estimates of the cost of certain proposed works at King’s High School.—Received.

The Central Agency Ltd., Wellington, wrote with reference to a shield for the Girls’ High School for stimulating the interest of pupils studying needlework and dressmaking, etc.—lt was stated that, with the consent of Miss King, the principal of the school, the board would be pleased to accept the shield. BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL. The rectorof the Boys’ High School (Mr H. P. Kidson) reported as follows under date October 13:— The total number now on the school roll is 381, made up as follows:—First and second-year pupils, 202; seniors,' 168; and one paying pupil. The correspondeing totals for October, 1933-37 are respectively GS2, 698, 650, 489, and 409. The drawing room has now been fitted with curtains for darkening it for class work with lantern slides and films. This ■will enable us to show educational films, which we hope to secure with the help of the recently-appointed museum educational officer. The secondary school inspectors (Mr Caradus and Mr Tomlinson) again visited the school last month. Forty higher leaving certificates were provisionally awarded. The school was visited 'bn Monday, October 10 4 -by the Marquess of Lothian amf Captain Cazalet. The latter spoke briefly on the:necessity for the youth of the democratic countries, to be as willing to make.Jkacrifices for their country \ as the youth ,of the totalitarian, Lord? Lothian, who . ;isj secretary' < Rh Jues Scholarship ' Trust,'then g*ve an address on ®hod Scholarship. The oratory competitions were of a very good standard this year. The senior was won by F. Still, and the junior by J. M. Calder. The junior comnetition was the best yet held. Mr AV. R. Brngh and the Rev. D. C. Herron were the judges. The report was adopted.

GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL. The principal of the Girls’ High School rcf/orted as folows under date October 14 : , The number on the roll at date is 511, compared with 532 in 1937, 526 in 1936, 50S in 1935, and 511 in 1934. The attendance has improved since the beginning of the term, the measles epidemic apparently abating. Of the seven withdrawals listed since last report, four were girls who had not returned at the beginning of the terra, but who did not send any intimation of their having left. Four have taken positions in shops, two in offices, and one has gone to Timaru High School, due to her parents shifting. The secondary school inspectors, Miss Hetheringtou and Mr Learning, paid a short visit at the beginning of this _ month. In connection with higher leaving certificates and the grading of teachers, the list of recommendations for higher leaving certificates, 43 in number all told, was accepted in toto. Examination entries have been sent forward as follows: —University entrance scholarship, 3; Lissie Rathbone Scholarship, 4; university entrance, 62; university entrance (one subject), 1; school certificate, 68 full, 3 partial. The annual meeting of the Barnardo Helpers’ League was held on Friday, September 30, when the secretary, Miss Townsend reported that a total sum of £29 15s had been collected in various ways during the year. The report was adopted. KING’S HIGH SCHOOL.

The Rector of the King’s High School reported as follows under date October 14:— '

During- the period nine boys_ left school, of whom seven secured positions and two loft the district. The present roll is 282, the corresponding figures for 1936 and 1937 being 190 and 239 respectively. Up to the present date 38 boys have left, of whom 30 have taken positions, incidating that opportunities of are more frequent than in the previous two .years. There is a pleasing improvement in attendance. The number of entrants for public examinations is naturally increased this year, 21 boys entering for the public service entrance and school certificate examinations. The school was visited on September 26 by Messrs E. Caradus and H. Tomlinson, of the secondary school inspectorate, in connection with routine matters. Ten candidates for the higher leaving certificate were awarded the certificate on the recommendation of the staff conditional upon the completion of the year’s work. On October 10, through the kindness of Mr Downie Stewart, a yisit was made to the school by Captain V. Cazalet, M.P., M.C., Chippenham, England. It is interesting to record the first award of a silver medal to a hoy of the school in the Imperial Challenge Shield Competition, 1937. The recipient was A. Cunningham, who scored the possible. The machinery for the woodwork room has now been installed by Mr F rancis and is operating satisfactorily. The provision of this aid will eliminate a certain amount of expense and also a great deal of heavy work on the part of the bovs. Our warm thanks are extended to Mr D. W. M. Burn for a handsome gift to the library of three volumes of '.Chambers Cyclopaedia of English Literature. The report was adopted. {
