NEW INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

APPROVED FOR DUHEOIH SOUTH HACAHDREW ROAD SCHOOL TO CLOSE Advice has been received by the Hon. F. Jones from the Minister of Education (Hon. P. Fraser) that Cabinet has approved of a grant' for the erection of an intermediate school at South Dunedin. The effect of this will b© to close the present Maeandrew Road School as a primary school, and also to take in forms 1 and 2 from the Caversham, St. Clair, and For bury Schools, as well as forms 1 and 2 of the Maeandrew Road School, making a total attendance of approximately 550 children. The area of the site of the new school (including that occupied by the present Maeandrew Road School) is in the vicinity of four acres, but the proximity of Tonga Park and Bathgate Park will afford plenty of extra space for playing fields. • , In addition to 14 classrooms, the building will comprise an assembly hall. 80ft by 40ft, with a large stage, a home science block, a laboratory, separate rooms for needlework, art work,_ and library. The existing manual training building will be retained and used for woodwork and craft work. The administration block will comprise separate offices for the headmaster and the head mistress, a staff room, kitchen, and other necessary adjuncts. Ihe whole building has been so planned that each classroom will receive the maximum sunshine available. The name of the new school has not been definitely decided upon. There may be a desire expressed that the old name of Maeandrew Road School should bo retained, but as the intermediate school in Albany street is known as the Dunedin North School it is probable that the new building will be assigned the name of the Dunedin South Intermediate' School. .... Tenders for the erection of the buildings will be called shortly, and the Education Board plans to have everything in readiness for the commencement of the new school early in 1940.
