He ran to the front from the early pacemaker, Beau Gallante, at the end of six furlongs, and had a useful lead round the top and into the straight from Pango and Iddo, Southern Blood, and Beau Gallante. Silver Sight made a brilliant effort at the last fence, and once in the run home was never in danger of being overhauled. Southern Blood stayed on to gain second money from Ambition, who finished fast. Sunee, who was in the rear of the field for most of the journey, put in a characteristic run in the straight to just miss third money. Iddo and Pango were next. Redolent was never in a likely position, and finished well back.

Daniel Defoe was sent out at a very short price for the Taita Handicap. Although restless at the barrier, he was one of the first away, and closely followed Pas Do Cheval into the straight, with Pen, Portal, Kateshridgo, and Scandal following. The favourite soon drew out in the run home, and, although having to he kept up to his work, he had a length to spare at the post from Scandal, who finished solidly to heat Portal, who also did some attractive work in the run home to head off Pas De Cheval on the post. Serenata and Pen headed the remainder. The winner closely resembles Defaulter in conformation, and, like him, is inclined to take advantage of his rider letting up on him. * • * « Sly Fox carried an army of supporters through in the Wainui Handicap by an impressive victory in a bunched finish. When the field had gone a furlong Lucullus Lad had sorted himself out and led round the top from the early leaders, Rabble, Royal Minstrel, Waitaka, The Bigot, Wild Chase, and Sly Fox, with Dictate, Cricket, Argentic, and Padishah in the rear. Lucullus Lad was first to the turn for home from Rabble, Arctic King, Wild Chase, Sly Fox, and Dictate, all running m close order. Lucullus Lad appeared to be holding his own until Sly Fox put- in his claim inside the distance, while several others closed up, and in an exciting tussle Sly Fox won by a length from Lady Montana, who was not prominent until the closing stages, the latter heating Lucullus Lad in the last few strides. The Bigot was close up next, with Arctic King, Silver River. Dictate, Ned Cuttle. Wild Chase, Rabble, and Padishah following in that order, « * • *

Royal Star 11. was considered the best of propositions in the Rimutaka Handicap, but although .always in a prominent position he was never really dangerous. Florence Mills was first to enter upon the course proper from Estatic. White Gold, Red Cat, Counterblast, and the favourite, but nothing had a chance of reducing the gap to the leader, who won by a wide margin. In a close tussle for third money Sporting Gift finished fast to beat the favourite by a head, with a similar margin to Counterblast, who drew an outside marble and was wide out all the way. Lord Cavendish and Hunter s Eve were next.
Tidewaiter and Siegnnmd were the best supported in the Wellington Handicap, but neither gained a place. When the field settled down Trench Fight pulled himself to the front and entered the back stretch clear of Tidewaiter and Lazybones, with Master Cyklon, Quadroon, and Happy Landing dose up, and Cape Gabo in last place. Happy Landing joined Trench Fight rounding the home turn and heat him into the straight, with Tidewaiter, Lazybones, and Quadroon handy. Happy Landing soon opened up a big break and was proclaimed an easy winner, but his apprentice rider commenced to ride him a furlong from the post, and Quadroon gradually crept up to gain a last stride verdict. Boomerang, who was not prominent until the final stages, was a good third clear of Lazybones, with Tidewaiter, Cape Gabo, Siegnnmd, and Trench Fight following. “*» » *
Master Hotspur was a better favourite than Bean Livre in the Wellesley Stakes, but failed badly, while the latter bad a decisive win. After a long delay owing to another rider being required to replace G. Goulsbro on Anopheles, this rider suffering a broken leg through being kicked at the post, Nora Gregor was first to show out and Winning Rival was last to move off Nora Gregor led on to the course proper from Anopheles, Beau Livre, Kounota, and Master Hotspur. The run homo had not long been in progress before Beau Livre drew to the front to carry on to win with something in band from Konneta, who caught Anopheles on the (lost. Tableau was a fair fourth in front of Submission, Nora Gregor, Vascones, Winning Rival, and Class Form.
I The time, 59sec, is a race record, beating the previous best, 59j, by Whenuakura in 1933. * * » * The best finish of the day was staged in the Shorts Handicap, five horses crossing the line in a bunch, and there was a dead-heat for first place. Surmount and Brunhild were the first to show out. The former led on to the course proper from Brunhildj Gay Son. Gay Chou, Te Hero, Mittie, and Alunga. The two leaders were done with lOOyds from the post, and Gay Son. Gay Chou, Alunga, Te Hero, and Majority became prominent, and in an exciting struggle the judge was unable to separate Te Hero and Alunga. with Gay Chou half a head away, the same distance in front of Gay Son, with another half-head to Majority. Surmount and Brunhild were next. • • • • Another sensational final struggle was provided in the October Handicap. Trebor was an early leader from Accomplice and Screamer, and the lastnamed led round the far turn into the straight from Trebor, Accomplice, Nereus, and Rustem. Accomplice tackled Trebor in the last 50yds, and Screamer, after weakening at the distance. made a renewed effort, while Nereus, Larwood, and Dainty Sue also joined in. All these passed the post in a bunch, the verdict going to Accomplice by a head, with a head to Nereus, who heat Screamer by a head. Larwood and Dainty Sue were right u;p, in front of Lady Rosette and Itrhcik. The unlucky runner appeared to be Dainty Sue, who was sent back during the middle stages from a forward position and had several lengths to make up in the straight.
