NOW IN WELLINGTON

OTAGO CHAMPION POLE-VAULTER [By Pistol. J Les Fagg, the Otago polo vault champion, is now in the employ of the Pensions Department in Wellington, and this fine all-round athlete has joined up with the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, and has got down to serious training.* He states that the Hataitai ground will not be available until November 1, and at present training is' being carried out on a small reserve at Pirie street. On October 8, Les, who won the Port road race last year, went to Trentham to see the Olympic Club’s 20-mile gold cup race being run. The winner, E. Richardson, is a very solid runner, who impressed as a distinct possibility for the Marathon journey, but he is not likely to give a great deal of attention to this distance. The Wellington Centre’s Marathon championship is to bo held in conjunction with the Labour Day sports at Newton Park. Trophies are valued at £4. £1 10s, and 15s. The ex-Toko athlete is also a very keen boxing 'man, and he viewed the Gilclo-Jarvis bout. Two fly-weights, L. Mulholland and P Dunn, fought an excellent (preliminary, a fine open bout over three two-minute rounds. The first professional bout between Joe Hansen and F. Finnigan was a very willing fight, Hansen being a solid though not brilliant boxer, while his opponent was a fast puncher without much science. The big bout was another of Wellington’s failures. Jarvis appeared to lack confidence from the moment he entered the ring, and Oildo had the better of the exchanges throughout. He is verv fast en bis feet, and is clever at ducking and taking punches going away.
