FORESTERS

The fortnightly meeting of Court j Woodlands Pride was held on Monday, October 17, in the court room, Oddfellows’ Hall, Stuart street. The thief i ranger (Sister K. Grey) presided, and was supported by a full staff of officers, with the exception of the senior beadle, who was on sick leave. The court was opened promptly at 7 o’clock to enable the routine business to be transacted in time to commence a trump whist game at 8.30, to which a number of friends and brethren had been invited. The woodwards reported on their visits to the sick members during the fortnight, after which sick pay claims were passed for payment. The inward correspondence included a letter from the district executive, intimating that the court had gained third place in the ritual competition. An invitation to visit Court Marion on the 18th instant was received, it being resolved that as many members as possible attend. Court Enterprise also sent a double ticket for its seventy-fifth anniversary meeting and social in the Embassy Salon on October 26. The sub-chief ranger (Sister A. Rush) was appointed to represent the court. A notice, calling a meeting of the Syllabus Committee on October 27, was received, two officers being appointed to attend, with the necessary copy to be prepared by the court’s Social Committee. The court was closed at 8.15 p.m., when visitors and friends were admitted to take part in the trump whist tournament. The first prize for ladies was won by Past Chief Ranger Sister E. H. Whyborn, of Court Woodland’s Pride. The first prize for gentlemen went to Bro. M'Kersey, of Court Pride of the Leith. The other two prizes were won by Sister Craighead and Bro. Collins. A feature of the game was the playing of the “ silent ” hand, which caused much amusement. The prizes were presented by Sister and Bro. Benfell, who congratulated the winners on their success. Supper was served by the lady members attached to the court’s Social Committee, which terminated a very pleasant evening. Court Saint Andrew’s held its usual meeting on Monday last. C.R. Bro. R. Hughson presided over a good attendance of officers and members. Invitations were received from Courts Marion and Enterprise and accepted. The 500 players were welcomed to the meeting from Courts King Edward’s Pride, Littlejohn, and Pride of Dunedin to take part in the final round, and after keen games Court Littlejohn won the shield for 1938. The report from the Social Committee was approved for the syllabus to be inserted in the 1939 handbook, and P.C.R. Bro. C. H. M'Keich and C.S. Bro. C. E. Baines were elected as delegates to the annual meeting of the Syllabus Committee. As a mark of esteem of P.C.R. Bro. D. A. Swann’s faithful service rendered over a good many years, the court resolved to honour him by inserting his photograph in the handbook. It was decided to invito Courts Pride and Queen of Green Island to the next meeting to play a return match of badminton. C.R. and 5.C.11. reported on the banquet held at Court Littlejohn. One nomination was received and accepted for next court night. Badminton doubles were played after the meeting closed, and after some keen games, enjoyed by all present, Bros. C. H. M'Keich and C. E. Barnes emerged winners. P.C.R. Bro. C. H. M'Keich was nominated for the office of district beadle at the annual district meeting.
