FIVE NEW RECORDS

BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS GOOD MATERIAL IN ALL DIVISIONS Held yesterday on the school ground at Littlobourne for the first time, the annual athletic sports of Otago Boys’ High School proved one of the most successful and enjoyable fixtures of recent years, and the wealth of athletic talent in the school was revealed by the fact that, although the record performances have tightened up, .no fewer than five now marks were established and one was equalled. The policy of the school authorities in scrapping the old traditional victor ludorum contest in favour of specialised championships has been widely acclaimed, and could with advantage be followed by iuanv other schools throughout the Dominion. The success that attended the innovation yesterday is sure to lead to its adoption in the intermediate and junior clauses in the near future. Competition in championship and handicap events was very keen, and the performances were uniformly good. The senior sprints championship was won by ti. G. Thomson with 9J points, K. W. Paterson being runner-up with 6. Thomson showed promising form to win the 100yds in 10 4-ssec and the 220yds in 24 ~3-ssco, Paterson being second in each case. The senior middle-distance championship was won by the outstanding Otago junior champion J. A. M'Pherson, who won all his races comfortably, totalling 12 points. .1. G. Gonrlio was runnerup with 4 points. M'Pherson took the 440yds in 56 l-ssec, the mile in 4inin 52sec, and yesterday afternoon completed the treble with the half-mile, won. in 2min 12 2-6 sec. Had he been extended he could have reduced this last time by seconds and possibly have broken the school record, for he is a strong runner with a very nice action. The field events cup went to M. J. L. Phelan, a fine all-round exponent, who scored 10 points, K. W. Paterson being runner-up with 4. Phelan’s 39ft 9in, the 121 b shot putt, as already reported, lowered a long-standing record, and besides winning the long jump with just on 20ft, he and Paterson both performed well in the javelin throwing, Paterson sending it to a distance of 125 ft 9sin and Phelan 120 ft 6in. In some of the nhon-championship fieldi events good performances were registered,; and with the form being shown by K. W. Paterson, the Otago junior champion, and H. A. Foote, 10ft or better would have been reached probably in the pole vault, which had to be discontinued owing to a mishap to the equipment.

In the intermediate (under 16$) division two very promising athletes fought out the issue. B. E. M'Pherson won the cup with 18 points, J. M. Wilkinson (last year’s winner) being run-ner-up with 12. . M'Pherson made a clean sweep of the flat events, taking the 100 yards in 11 2-ssec, 220 yards in 24 3-ssec, 440 yards in 56 4-ssec, and the half-mile in 2min 16 4-ssec. His time for the furlong was two-fifths of a second, faster than the record established by A. R. Duff in 1935, and equalled by A. J. Alldred and E. S. Highet in 1936, his grand effort in the ,qpiu , ter.eg.pallejd,tlie-rccor<L,put up by I A, S. T 5. Geary in 1934, and fiis time for the half-mile was a second faster than the mark set by R. G. Jolly 12 years ago. Like his brother, the intermediate champion is a strong and very free runner.. Wilkinson also set a new time for the 120 yards hurdles, his 17 l-ssec being one-fifth of a second faster than his own mark established last year. His 18ft lljin will probably be recognised as an intermediate long jump, record for which no mark has yet been set, this being a comparatively new event in this division. Wilkinson’s third success was in the high jump. The new junior champion is W. Porter, a tall, long-striding boy, with distinct possibilities. He won five events in a row—the 100 yards in the sparkling time of 11 l-ssec, 220 yards in 24 4-ssec, the half-mile in 2mm 31 3-ssec, the long jump with 18ft Ofin, and the 100 yards hurdles in 14sec. His time in the cup heat over the obstacles was better than the existing record, but it was left till one of the semi-finals of the handicap for him to return his best time of 13 2-ssec, which will stand as the new record. Several other likely .runners were seen in the junior section—K. A. Hay ran well to wi n the quarter in 62 3-ssec, and J-. V. Ingram, who was second in the 100 and 220 yards, put up one of the best performances of the day when, from the scratch mark, he dead heated with M'Lean (syds) in the 100 yards handicap, under 15, in llscc. M'Lean, by the way, also won the 220 yards junior handicap. R. G. Gough, winner of the 120 yards hurdles senior championship, was favoured with better conditions in contesting the handicap event, registering 16 l-ssee in a semi-final and 16sec in the final Gough, the Otago junior champion, is a good hurdler, and has a particularly strong finish. In the open handicap class Owen shaped well, winning the 100yds, from the 6yds mark, in lOsec, and the 220yds, off 12yds, in 24 3-ssec. Hitchon was a good performer in the under 16$ handicaps, taking the 440yds from .scratch in 60 l-ssec, and rnn- | rung second in the half-mile irony the j back mark, the winner being Tipler (30yds), in 2min 18 l-ssec. In winning the half-mile walk, off 20yds, in 4min 17 4-ssec, K. W. Paterson gave quite a good exhibition. The control of the fixture was excellent, and there were many old boys and friends of the school present. They were entertained at afternoon tea in the school hall by the wives of members of the staff, assisted by pupils of tho Otago Girls’ High School. Results
