(Received October 20, at 10.30 a.m.) The Pan-American Airways Philippine Clipper arrived nearly a week late, after averting a fprced landing m the approximate area in which the Hawaii Clipper disappeared in July. , The passengers .showed no signs ot nanic. The plane dropped from 8,500 feet to 100 feet, and one motor failed. The pilot calmly righted the craft and used the three remaining motors. He said that to place Australia in a position of security substantial expenditure wouid be necessary both for actual defence equipment and industrial'development in its widest sense. The Government proposed to suggest to States that a defence advisory committee should, be established comprising representatives of the various State Governments and industry.
