METALS RECOVER

TIN CLOSES ABOVE £2lO STANDARD COPPER GAINS 25/Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 19. (Received October 20, at 1 p.m.) Following are to-day's official (middle) quotations on the London metal market, as reported by the Australian Mines and Metal Association, compared with those of October 18:

ITALY IMPORTS SUGAR FIRST FOR MANY YEARS An official bulletin of the Italian sugar industries stated recently that for the first time in many years, owing to the scarcity of the beet crop, 24.000 tons pf foreign sugar had to be imported up to the end of July, when the stocks in the factories were reduced to only 5,000 tons. The new crop is just coming in and, though deficient in quantity, it is satisfactory in sugar content. Production for the year 1937-38 is estimated at 380.000 tons, which is considered enough to meet increased consumption. Sugar in Italy is liable-to an Excise duty and a tax, equalling together three times the original wholesale price of sugar.
