MR J. R. HANAN CHOSEN [Per United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, October 19. Mr J. 11. Hanan, deputy mayor, was to-day elected mayor of Invercargill with an absolute majority over the other two candidates. The election was caused by the death of Mr John Miller two months ago. The result of the polling was: — J. R. Hanan 4,202 Hugh Ritchie 1,649 H. J. Farrant 1,563 Mr Hanan, who is 29 years of age, is a son of the late Mr James Albert Hanan. He was educated at the Waitaki Boys’ High School and the Otago University, and after he had qualified for the legal profession he commenced practice at Invercargill. Mr Hanan is an able debater and an eloquent speaker, and as a member of the Invercargill City Council demonstrated that he possessed force of character and progressive ideas.
