ENGINE DRIVERS’ DISPUTE

THE MINES SECTION A COMPLETE AGREEMENT [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 19. Complete agreement was reached in the mines section of the engine drivers’ dispute, which was heard in tho Conciliation Council to-day. The now award, which will operate from the first pay fortnight from November 1, 1938, to April 30, 194(3, applies to the Northern, Otago, and Southland industrial districts.

(Rates of wages were agreed upon as follows:—First class engine drivers, 22s lOd a day j second class, 21s 6d; locomotive drivers, 22s lOd; firemen required to hold certificate, 21s fid; firemen without certificate, 19s lldj first class fitters.(Waikato only), 23s 6d; second class (Waikato only), 21s 6d; loco, fireman-shunter, 20s. Work done on afternoon shifts wijl be paid for at the rate of fid a shift extra. Men working thfed shifts will bo paid at the rate of 4d a shift extra. An allowance of 2s 6d a shift will be paid to workers required to work in exceptionally dirty places where cannot avoid getting their clothes spoiled ■jyitll grease or acid. All shifts will be of eight hours, exclusive of meal times, except in cases where continuous work is being carried on. When two or more shifts are being worked continuously on the same job, the men on the job shall change shifts in turn. Forty-six hours and a-hal(f will constitute a week’s work, aiid 46 hours will constitute a week’s work for a pay-week. Overtime will be paid for at the rate of time and a-half for th 6 first three hours and double time thereafter. Men employed on work regularly done on Sundays will be paid at the rate of time and a-half, but double time will be paid for all other work on Sundays and agreement, holidays. Double time will bo paid id workers employed inside_ a boiler in cleaning flues, or in cleaning, chipping, or repairing flues of furnaces.
