Dr C. E. Hercus and Df James Fitzgerald left this morning- for Wellington on university business. Mr George Crow returned yesterday from an extended tour abroad. Mr A. J. Gordon left thi§, morning for Wellington to attend a conference of limbless ex-servicemen.
Mr W. A. Jenkins (president of th* Otago Swimming Centre) and Mr DC. Bannatyne (educational officer) left this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Association. Mr Lionel Curtis, one of the foundation members of Chatham House and a member of the Royal Institute, and Mr I. S. Macadam, secretary of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, have been on a visit to Dunedin. Both attended the recent conference of the institute in Australia, and last night they were present at a meeting of the local circle of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs. Mi* Curtis left this morning for Timaru. . Results of the election by postal ballot of five members to represent the General Court of Convocation on the Senate of the University of New Zealand were announced yesterday. Four retiring'members of the Senate—Mr F, A. de la Mare (Hamilton), Mr A. E. Flower (Christchurch) Dr W. Newlands (Dunedin), and Professor G. W. von Zedlitz (Wellington) retained their seats, but Mr T. U. Wells (Auckland) has been replaced by Mrs W. ,N. Benson (Dunedin). Other unsuccessful candidates were Mr F. H. Campbell (Dunedin) and Mr ,N.M. P. .Gibson. (Auckland). Mrs Benson is the second , woman to be elected, the other being Dr Chapman (Dunedin). A Wellington Association message states that the. congregation of . St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Kilbirnie, have decided to extend a call to the Rev. L. H. Ker, of Knox Church, Gonville (Wanganui).. Mr Ker, who is. a New Zealander, is a Master of Arts of the University of New Zealand and of Cambridge, and is regarded as a particularly able scholar. For a. time he was a professor in the Missionary College in North China. A Press Association cable message from London states that Evelyn, the elder daughter of the late Major Willis, of Wiltshire, and Mrs Frank Jagger, is affianced to an Air Force officer, lan, the only son of Mr and Mrs GwynnePotts, of Taupo, New Zealand. , Mr J. 11. Hanan, now elected Mayor of Invercargill, is, at 29 years, the youngest chief magistrate of any metropolitan area in the Dominion. He is a son of the late Mr James A. Hanan, and a nephew of the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M. After his school and university career he served in the law office of Mr Mark Hanan in Dunedin, and Messrs Stout and Hewart, at Invercargill, and, qualifying for the profession, commenced practice in the latter city. He quickly obtained a reputation as an analytical, logical, and forceful public speaker, and is notably well ■ read isr public administration and economies. An Auckland Association -message states that passengers arriving by the Rangitiki from London included Lady Stewart (Banks Peninsula), accompanied by her two daughters, after a visit to England; Captain V; C.
