Dr F. Ehrenhaft, of Vienna, wrote applying for a position in the University. The applicant stated that he had been a professor in the physics department of the University of Vienna for 25 vears, but political events had compelled him to leave.—The Chancellor remarked that it was regrettable that one who had given such service to science should have been compelled to leave the country of his birth,-—Other members of the council expressed sympathy with the applicant’s position, and after various suggestions had been put, forward it was resolved, on the motion of Dr Hercus, that the matter be referred to the department for scientific research. The council considered a circular from, the Canterbury branches of the Victoria League and Royal Empire Society suggesting the establishment of a memorial to Edward Gibbon Wakefield. —The council expressed itself as in general sympathy with the movement, but considered that it was not a matter for tha University. The recommendation of the Professorial Board that in future the autumn term end at 1 p.m. on the Tuesday of capping week, and that the winter term commence on the Monday previous to the Wednesday on which it commenced at present, and continue to the Friday of the final week, was approved! On the motion of the Chancellor, ifi was resolved that a letter of thanks bo sent to the Prime Minister in reference to the appointment of a committee on the question of University graduates and the Public Service.—The mover remarked that the appointment was at least a step towards the attainment of what the University of New Zealand and the University of Otago, had, repeatedly asked for. The council should therefore express its high appreciation of the Prime Minister’s action. »
