WOMEN’S GOLF
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SURPRISES IK SEMI-FINALS [Per United Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, October 19. There were two sensations in today’s semi-finals of the women’s national golf championship. The first was when Miss S. Collins, the youthful Wellington player, gave the twice past champion, Mrs Fullerton-Smith (Marton), a tremendous tight all the way and defeated her on the final green. Then Miss Horwell (Timaru) capped her past fine exhibitions by playing par golf all round the course in the best ladies’ game ever seen at New Plymouth to defeat Miss Duncan (Wanganui). Miss Horwell is favoured for the final to-morrow, but she will have a very hard fight. This afternoon’s play was a bogey handicap and the second round of the Rattray Cup. The championship semi-finals resulted:— Miss Collins beat Mrs F ullertonSmith, 1 up. Miss Horwell beat Miss Duncan, 5 and 3.
