Ketchen presided when the North Otago Scottish Society held its monthly ingleside. A typically Scottish programme was provided by the band, Misses Cayford, H. Gibb, Patterson, Joan Hicks, W. Pile, and G. Doran, Mr and Mrs D.-H. Thomson, and Messrs Lane, J. Jackman, A. Gillies, and M. Adamson, with Misses N. Thomson .and Slater as accompanists. Piper Campbell, played the' national dance music. MR JOHN VERNOR. Oh his ninetieth birthday Mr. John Vernor was felicitated by a party of citizens, led by the mayor, (Mr IC. Familton). Mr Vernor has resided in Oamaru for 60 years, and has been, arid still is, an active citizen. Among those present were Messrs M. F. E. Cooney (ex-mayor), W. Smyth, T. R. Beattie, J. Branthwaite (town clerk), J. A. Wray, W. Skinner, J. H. Main (borough solicitor), C. Byrne, and A. Wilson. The mayor conveyed the good wishes of the citizens.' and on behalf of Alfred Lodge Mr _ Wilson presented Mr Vernor with a pipe. Mr Vernor has; been 56 years in the lodge,- and,' elected: 47 years ago as a’trustee, he still holds the position. He has also served as.a borough councillor, and is a keen mem* her of the Awamoa Bowling Club. ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB. : At an» enjoyable social - evening th» trophies won during the season by members of the fourth and ■ fifth grades of the Athletic' Football Club were presented by Messrs'D. Lawrie and R. Purvey. Mr W. Budd presided, and Mr M--F. Woodward represented the North Otago Rugby Union. _ The following were the trophy winners:—Fourth grade :■ T. Collins, best back, Mr. S.Browne’s cup; J. Halvorsen, most improved back, ,Mr D. Lawrie’s cup; JWarded, best forward, Mr J. James’* cup; J. Turvey, most improved forward, Mr L. Park’s cup; J. Mrs Bridgman presided, over the September meeting of the Wesley' Ladies’ Guild. An enjoyable programme was presented by Miss L. Chase, Mesdames Drummond, Souness, Amies, and Jones. ON THE FARM. Fine weather during- this week hasbeen much appreciated by the North Otago farming commodity, Nor-West-ers have dried _ up the ground, which is now in splendid order, A number of the autumn-sown crops are looking exceptionally well. Lambing is in fujl swing and many good percentages are reported. •' TOURING SCHOOLBOYS, The Waitaki High School boys wh® have been touring Canada are returning by the Niagara and are expected to arrive at the school on Wednesday, next. SCOTTISH CLUB. There was a large attendance at the meeting of the North Otago Scottish Club, when Ex-chief Donald Miller gays an interesting address on -the ‘Fair City of Perth.’ Songs were rendered by'Mrs'E. Watson and dances were given by Misses N., F.,-. and -S. Roberts (’SYaimate). The accompanists were Misses A. Watson, A. Gillies, arid Piper D. Miller. . ( JOHN BULLEID AND CO. Moving the adoption of the report a€ the , annual meeting of Messrs John Bulleid and Co. Ltd., on Thursday night, the chairman of directors (Mf D. Findlay) said that,_ early in the year business was maintained at - * high level, but, after a few months, drought conditions were experienced and the effect became noticeable. Despite these adverse factors, the turnover for the full year was. orily slightly less than the previous .year. The new awards had considerably increased working costs, but the, policy of maintaining the staff was rigidly-adhered to.Some savings were effected in other directions, and, as a result, the net profit was in excess of the .previous year, and after allowing for, depreciation, land tax and income tax, was equivalent to, £6 14s 4d per cent, on paid-out capital. The directors had recommended the payirient of a dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, on both' classes of shares, and after the payment of this dividend there would! remain the sum of £1,078 5s to be carried forward to next year’s accounts. In addition to this amount, there was a reserve account of £4,837 4s 4d. The retiring directors, Messrs D-, Findlay and A, Headland, were reelected, and Mr D. V. G. Smith , was reappointed auditor
