WOMEN’S GOLF IN AUSTRALIA

HIGH STANDARD REPORTED MRS GUY WILLIAMS RETURNS [PiB Okiteo Pbess Association] WELLINGTON, September 7. The opinion that the standard of women’s golf in Australia at present is very high, and that there are in the Commonwealth a number of most promising young players, was expressed by Mrs Guy Williams, captain-manager of the New Zealand women’s team which was recently over there. Mra Williams returned to-day by the Maunganui, accompanied by Misses Hornabrook, Buchanan, and Collins having remained behind in. Sydney after playing members returned to Newj Zealand. “ While gratified at the New Zealand team having retained the Tasman Cup, it was disappointing,” said Mrs Williams, “ that they did not do better in the open championships." It was rather difficult to become accustomed to the different light on Australian courses, and it appeared as though, New Zealand teams required a little longer than a week to accustom themselves to the new conditions and recover from the crossing before commencing competition play. She felt that the experience gained by the members of the New Zealand team and the players who accompanied it had been most valuable, and would be reflected in their play. The trip had been most successful in every way, and she could not speak too highly of the splendid hospitality extended to them by their Australian hosts. In this respect they owed a particular debt of gratitude to Miss D. Clift, president of the New South Wales Ladies’ Golf Union, and of the Australian Ladies’ Golf Union.
