DAVIS CUP
THE FOOTFAULT INCIDENT RULE SHOULD BE MODIFIED ■ NEW YORK, September 5. The tennis critic of the ‘ New York Times ’ says: “ The circumstances of America’s victory are keenly regretted by all those who are jealous of any impeachment of the American spirit of fair play. The Australians’ graciousness makes the unfortunate footfault incident more deplorable.” A tennis writer in the ‘Herald-Tri-bune’ says: “It lias been proved again that the footfault rule should be modified so that the penalty is imposed only when the offender crosses the line with a quick start.” Commenting that over-zealous officials can wreck any game Mr Grantland Rice writes: “The United States lost far more than it gained by winning the Davis Cup challenge round. There is no glory in winning on the calling of a delayed technicality against an underdog team that has travelled 11,000 miles.’’-
