The question whether an outside referee should control the representative Rugby match between Wellington and Otago, in view of the fact that the Ranfurly Shield will possibly be at stake, was discussed, by the Management Committee _of the Wellington Rugby Union to-night. Mr J. Moffitt said that Otago should he asked to nominate an outside referee, or else the New Zealand Referees’ Appointment Board should be asked to appoint one. The opportunity to have an outside referee had been a privilege extended to every union visiting Wellington for a shield match for years past. The chairman (Mr J. N. Millard) said the impression should not be conveyed that the committee considered that Wellington would get a poor run from an Otago referee. Mr H. D. Morgan said that the Wellington team was going on an ordinary tour. They should not take away from Otago referees the privilege of controlling the game. Mr Moffitt: Otago is the only union that has held the shield to want a local referee. Mr Moffitt moved that the committee should ask for a list of outside referees to be submitted. The motion was lost on a show of hands, and a subsequent one, moved by Mr G. F. Jackson, was carried, that Otago be asked to submit the names of referees. MANAWATU NOT CHALLENGING [Per United Press Association.! PALMERSTON N.. September 6. The Manawatu Rugby Union does not intend to proceed with a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield this season. Otago had offered September 24, but Manawatu had already arranged to play Hawke’s Bay on that date, and does not feel disposed to make an alteration.
