ROAD ACCIDENTS
MINISTERIAL STATEMENT HEAVY TOLL OF LIFE STILL TAKEN [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 7, Figures relating to fatal road accidents in New Zealand last month were released to-day by the Minister of Transport (the Hon. 11. Semple). He said that 15 persons were killed on roads last mouth, compared with IS for the corresponding month of last year. There had been a distinct improvement in the accident rate in rural areas controlled by the Transport Department. In August, 1937, 12 persons lost their lives in rural areas and six in built-up areas. Last mouth fatalities outside the cities and main towns dropped from 12 to three. The number of accidents in built-up areas, however, increased from 0 to 12. The Wellington metropolitan area led with four fatalities. There were two fatal accidents each in Christchurch and Dunedin and one in Auckland.
There had apparently been an improvement in the standard of the conduct of drivers, added the Minister. Fatalities involving drivers and passengers dropped from 11 in August _ last year to four last month. Pedestrians, however, had not shown the same improved standard of care. There were six pedestrian fatalities last month compared with three during the previous August. Of six killed, four lost their lives at night time.
