Potato and other ground crop producers in neighbouring country areas are not greatly overjoyed by the reappearance of frosts, light though they have been. Early crops are in danger of being retarded in their growth by the action of the sun upon the frostladen, tender shoots in-the early morning. Contrary to the usual belief, it is not the direct action of frost upon the plants that does damage to crops, but the effect of the sun upon the whitened leaves. If a gardener was to take the precaution of washing away this frosty grime before the sun has. a chance to get at it, the plants will propagate without retardation. This is shown by plants that have had the protection of the shade of a hedge or fence throughout the day—despite heavy frosts, through being in the shade the growths are healthy and do not showing signs of having suffered. Though it is realised that the trarni and bus services in the city must maintain a strict schedule of times, and generally do so, there are occasions when, through, unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, delays occur. These cannot be obviated, though , the schedules can be resumed through “ speeding up ” between stops. However, there should be a system whereby all buses leaving for areas well outside the city, such as Green Island,' should have their clocks or drivers’ watches set to a clearly-defined standard. such as the Town Hall chimes or the Stock Exchange clock, which would relieve the feelings of those who have had to stand and watch their bus disappear in the distance without them through the driver’s timepiece being fast. • i
