BIGGEST BUILT AT BASE. Trials were undergone recently by the largest boat yet built by men of the permanent staff at the Devouport naval base. The boat, which was launched last month, was handed over to H.M.S. Achilles for use ns a ferry. Primarily designed for ferrying ratings and employees at the base across the harbour, this boat has an advantage over the old open launches in that it lias a cabin top to protect passengers from rain and spray. This is especially handy, since it is detachable, being made of three-ply wood, thereby facilitating the loading of bulky cargoes. The ferry is of wooden construction, and .being 43ft in length, with a beam of 13fb, has a carrying capacity of about 240 men. A 50-h.p. Diesel engine supplies motive force, the vessel being more powerful than its predecessors. It is thought that it will make faster trips than the older boats. NARBADA’S PROGRESS.
