POPULAR PRINTING MANAGER
MR BERT. RAWLINSON RETIRES THIRTY YEARS IN EMPLOY OF •EVENING STAR' COMPANY With close upon half a century of experience in, the two rid of paper and ink to look back upon, Mr Bert Rawlinson will retire from active business life this month after completing 30 years of service in the employ of The Evening Star ’ Company Ltd. Mr Kawlinson was, in the words of Sir Philip Sidney, admitted into the company of paper-blurrers when, as a lad, he joined the staff of Messrs Mills,
Dick and'Co. In entire agreement with an aphorism of Elbert Hubbard—we cannot at the moment recall the exact words, but it was to the effect that fortunate was a youth who once got the smell of printing ink into his nostrils —Mr Rawlinson became in his earlier days something of a rolling stone, a fashionable state for a young man in those times when competition was not as keen as it is to-day and movement by young men from one printing house to another for experience was rather encouraged by master (printers. In the process of “ gathering no moss Wellington saw him working for M Kee and Co., Wanganui made his acquaintance, the ‘ Mataura Ensign,’ a newspaper published at Gore, utilised his services, aiid as editor and printer of a newspaper published in Geraldine for the proprietors of the 1 Timaru Herald ’ he was quite a public figure in chat quiet Canterbury township. After some time “ on the road ” for Weeks Ltd.. Christchurch, he joined up with his present employers as a printing traveller, later succeeding the late Mr David Brown in the managership of the commercial printing department. During this long period he has made a host of friends in the business world. 1
Mr Rawlinson was, until recent years, very widely, known to the general] public through his regular appearances on the concert platform as a bass singeri and at various times he has been choir master at several, Dunedin churches. He is also an old bowler, being for many years a member of the Dunedin. North-east Valley, and Roslyn Bowling Clubs/
