(Received September 6, at 11 a.m.) In Australia’s first innings the tailenders were dismissed within an hour of the resumption of play to-day. Waite recorded his highest score on the tour and hit 10 4’s. O’lleilly was more sedate than usual and carried his bat for an excellent 40, leaving Australia in a sound position against “England’s strong batting. Big leg breaks from Ward resulted in the dismissal of Paynter and Compton. England had lost four for 89 when Ames came in. He was immediately in fine form and made a sparkling 50 in 45 minutes? Ward gave his most imposing performance of the tour._ He continued to bowl a magnificent vicious spin and had Valentine stumped. He then sent hack Ames with a smart, low right-hand return eatoh._ Ames had batted 80 minutes. He hit one 6 and 10 4’s. O’Reilly, in dismissing Alfred Pope, took his hundredth wicket of the tour. G. Pope hit usefully while the tailenders were being dismissed. The innings had lasted 180 minutes. M'Cabe and Brown had scored 45 in 35 minutes when a catch at the wicket ended Brown’s polished innings. A boundary fron\ Wilkinson carand M’Cabe’s score up to 26, the batsman thus reaching his 1,000 runs on the tour. M‘Cabe, with a glorious array of hooks, pulls, and drives, looked certain to reach his century when he was superbly caught low in the gully. He had batted 75 minutes, during which he made 91 of a total of 139 runs. His score included 17 4’s. Badcock was dashing along when Woolley held a great one-handed catch in the slips.
