KAWARAU GOLD
FOSSICKERS OBTAIN COLOURS GATES OF DAM CLOSED Possickers have again been busy in the bed of the Kawarau River, the dam gates having been closed about three weeks ago to enable repairs to be made to water races. The severe frosts experienced in July in the back country brought the river to a very low level which, it was hoped, would continue for some time. Unfortunately, however, a few days after the gates were shut a thaw came and the river rose. . • ~ ~ That the Kawarau River is the natural sluice box of the Otago Central goldfields ” was suggested by the colours won. Many took the opportunity to test crevices, and colours, were not lacking. The best return reported is that of one man who, working alone, recovered 12 pennyweights in two hours, stopping only when the rain came and the river began to rise. He did not keep his fortune a secret, and some excitement was caused by his success. If the weather had remained favourable, and there had been a continuation of low river, Cromwell might once again have been the scene of a small gold rush.
