Tlio above branch met on Thursday afternoon in the schoolroom of Wesley Church, Cargill road, Mrs Donaldson presiding. Correspondence from Miss Gray, district secretary, re September district conference in Oamaru, was read and discussed. The pesident agreed to act as delegate. Sympathy was expressed with Miss Ford, treasurer, who was absent owing to the death of a. relative at a distance The district officers desire a systematic distribution of no-license literature and the moral support of the,churches before the poll. Mrs Donaldson read the following extract taken from the ‘ Bulletin.’ a Church of Christ publication;—“Every Christian disciple, guided by conscience, is rightfully and lawfully a law unto himself. It is proper to do what is right in your own eyes. But in. the matter of Prohibition arises an issue, quite apart from politics, where the church can speak unitedly in the name of Christ. It is the one issue in which the church is interested. We stand for the Kingdom of God on earth, and the brewer and the hotelkeeper are in the opposition camp. There is no altering that fact. John Masefield, in his poem, ‘ The Everlasting Mercy,’ said of Saul Kane; ‘ Each glass of liquor crucifies the Lord afresh.’ It
is the truth. In more than 30 years of Christian ministry the writer can bear no other testimony than say he know* of no other organised cyil that doe« more harm to .the cause of Christ. When the issue arises, and the Christian disciple must cast a vote for or against the traffic, he may refuse to vote, but if he votes in the name of Christ he must say ‘No.’” ..
